MOORHEAD, Minn. (9/14/24)---It was 3-for-3 day for Concordia in its home opener against Wis.-Superior. The Cobbers used 3 first-half goals to fuel their 3rd straight win.
Concordia's 3-0 win over the Yellowjackets improves the team's record to 4-1-0 on the year. The victory is also the fifth straight for the Cobbers over Superior dating back to the 2009-10 season.
Darby Hannan, Chloe Sollom and first-year forward Reese Christ scored the goals for Concordia and the Cobber defensive back line led by Hannan and Emily Larsen recorded the team's third shutout of the season.
All the scoring in the first home game of 2024 took place in the opening 34:15 of the first half. The Cobbers were able to put pressure on the Superior back line by playing the ball through defenders and using their speed to create chances.
The first goal was set up by a through ball from Lucy Halverson to Emma Sheflo on the left wing. Sheflo went clear of the Yellowjacket defense on a breakaway but was taken out by the Superior goalie which led to one of the easiest penalty kick calls in the history of The Jake.
Hannan stepped up from her spot on the back line and calmly slotted the ball into the corner of the net.
The goal at 8:31 was Hannan's first of the year and first collegiate goal.
The second goal came from a dead ball in the 24th minute of play. The Cobbers were awarded a free kick on the right win, 20 yards out from goal. Larsen stepped up and served the ball to the back post where Kara Ellis ran onto the ball and headed the ball off the post. The ball caromed off the woodwork and ricocheted off the leg of Chloe Sollum who was crashing the net on the initial service.
Sollom's goal at 23:03 was her first of the season and third career strike.
The final goal of the game came from some "soccer luck" for Christ. One of the Superior defenders played the ball back to her keeper from 40 yards out from goal. Christ kept sprinting towards the goalie, who got to the ball but was slow in delivering the clearing attempt. Her clearance ricocheted off Christ's legs, landed behind the goalie and right in the path of Christ who kept sprinting past the goalie. She was able to take several touches before putting the ball in the empty net to give CC a 3-0 lead at 34:13.
Concordia's defense locked down the Yellowjackets in the final 55 minutes of play. CC gave up shots from distance but didn't allow any quality chances on goal.
Cobber keeper Kaitlin Petrich made a season-high eight saves to record her third shutout of the year.
Concordia will now set its sights on conference play when they host St. Scholastica in the MIAC opener on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 4 p.m.
