Late Strike Sends Cobbers To 1-Goal Loss
A goal with only 65 seconds to play in the second half sent Concordia to a 2-1 defeat at Augsburg. Sophomore Kara Ellis had the lone score for the Cobbers.
MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (10/12/24)---A goal with only 65 seconds to play in the second half sent Concordia to a 2-1 defeat at Augsburg.
The Cobbers never had the lead in the game in Minneapolis as they dropped their second straight 1-goal game. It's the first time all year that Concordia has lost consecutive games. CC is now 7-4-0 overall and 3-3-0 in conference play. The Auggies move to 6-3-4 in all games and 2-1-4 in the MIAC.
The teams battled through a scoreless first 45 minutes of play with a combined 14 total shots and seven shots on frame. Concordia was forced to chase the game in the third minute of the second half when Augsburg was able to get on the end of a long through ball and convert the breakaway.
It would take the Cobbes 17:51 to come up with the equalizer. As they upped their offensive attack and held more possession time in the Augsburg end, CC was awarded a corner kick in the 65th minute of play. Senior Emily Larsen delivered a perfect ball from the corner to the top of 6-yard box where sophomore Kara Ellis ran onto the ball and headed home the equalizer.
The goal at 64:56 was Ellis' team-leading fourth of the season and Larsen earned team-leading fifth assist on the play.
The game went back-and-forth between the penalty areas for the next 20 minutes of play until Augsburg netted the game-winner on a counterattack at 88:55.
Concordia was outshot 16-14 in total shots and 10-6 in shots on goal. The Cobbers held a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Chloe Sollom, Ella Shinn and Darby Hannan all had two total shots to lead CC.
Kaitlin Petrich made eight saves in the 90 minutes of play.
Concordia will return home to host St. Benedict on Wednesday, Oct. 16 at 3:30 p.m.
