Another Late Game-Winner on A Saturday Drops Cobbers
For the second straight Saturday on the road, the Cobbers conceded the game-winning goal in the final 5 minutes of play and dropped a 1-goal decision.
ST. PETER, Minn. (10/12/24)---For the second straight Saturday on the road, the Cobbers conceded the game-winning goal in the final 5 minutes of play and dropped a 1-goal decision.
A week ago, Concordia allowed a goal with 1:05 to play in the second half and lost 2-1 at Augsburg. On Saturday, the Cobbers gave up a goal with 4:24 to play and lost 1-0 at Gustavus.
The loss moves the Cobbers' overall record to 8-5-0 on the year. They are now 4-4-0 in the MIAC and remain in fifth place in the league standings as they try to stay in the Top 6 of the standings to earn their second straight conference tournament appearance.
Concordia is the only team in the MIAC that hasn't recorded a tie in league play or overall games.
The game-winning goal came in a similar fashion to the one at Augsburg where the Cobbers turned the ball over in the middle of the field and the Auggies were able to score on the counter. Against Gustavus, CC lost possession of the ball on the left wing near the mid line and GAC countered by playing the ball forward and then over to their left wing where an unmarked attacker was able to take a touch and then power the ball into the left corner of the net from 20 yards out.
The game against the Gusties was an even affair with the team stats being nearly identical. Gustavus held an 8-7 advantage in shots on goal and an 18-14 margin in total shots.
Senior midfielder Chloe Sollom led all players in total shots and shots on goal. She had five total shots in the game and put four on frame.
Amber Weibye had four total shots in the game and was one of three CC players with one shot on goal.
Kaitlin Petrich made seven saves in goal for the Cobbers and has 68 on the year and 160 for her career.
Concordia will return home to host Bethel before hitting the road for their final two games of the regular season. CC will square off against the Royals on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m.
