Senior Celebration Day Ends With 1-1 Tie
Concordia honored its six seniors before the annual Senior Celebration Day game and then went out and battled Bethel to a 1-1 tie in a key MIAC matchup.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/22/24)---Concordia honored its six seniors before the annual Senior Celebration Day game and then went out and battled Bethel to a 1-1 tie in a key MIAC matchup.
The Cobbers got a goal midway through the second half from senior Emily Larsen, but then conceded the game-tying goal with less than 5 minutes to play and came away with the 1-1 draw against the Royals.
The tie gives Concordia one point in the MIAC standings. That is good enough to keep them in fifth place in the race for the Top 6 spots in order to make the conference tournament.
Despite the 1-1 score line, the game was an offensive affair that had both teams creating quality scoring chances.
Both teams had breakaway opportunities stopped by the keeper late in the second half and both Cobber goalie Kaitlin Petrich and Bethel keeper Kate Green had to come up with clutch saves in both halves.
The shots and chances were nearly equal for the game with the Royals holding a slim 9-8 edge in shots on goal.
Concordia's goal came in the 67th minute of play after Hannah Mukhtar outsprinted a Royal's defender for 50 yards and forced a corner kick. Larsen stepped up and took the kick and lofted a cross into the penalty area. Green came out of her goal and punched the ball away from a pair of attackers but the ball went straight back to Larsen. Larsen ran forward to meet the ball and lofted a perfectly place shot that went over the top of Green and under the crossbar before settling into the back of the net.
The strike at 66:41 was Larsen's second goal of the season.
Bethel pressed for the equalizer in the next 15 minutes and had a pair of chances that were denied by Petrich. Green kept the Royals in the game when she stopped a breakaway attempt in the 85th minute of play.
The Royals came up with the game-tying goal after a throw-in deep in the Cobbers' defensive third of the field. A Bethel attacker was left alone on the right wing, gathered the throw-in, turned and fired a shot that slid under the crossbar and dropped into the far side of the net.
Emma Sheflo and Kara Ellis led the Cobbers with three total shots each and two shots on target.
Petrich finished the game with eight saves which tied her season high.
Concordia will finish off the regular season with a pair of road games. CC will play at St. Catherine on Saturday, Oct. 26 and at St. Olaf on Saturday, Nov. 2.
