ST. PAUL, Minn. (10/12/24)---If the opening meet is any sign of things to come, it's going to be an exciting year for the Cobbers.
Senior Kiernan Darling won the 1-meter diving competition, was second in the 3-meter event and Callie Metsala recorded four Top 5 finishes to help Concordia post a third-place finish at the St. Catherine Pentathlon.
The Cobbers finished with 942 points which was 336 more than third-place Hamline – a team that finished ahead of Concordia at last season's MIAC Championship Meet.
The meet featured only five events and was scored similar to a track & field pentathlon. Concordia had five athletes swim in all five events and had three finish in the Top 20 in the overall points standings.
Darling started her final collegiate diving season with one of the best performances of her career. She won the 1-meter, 11-dive competition with a score of 332.90. Darling was also second in the 3-meter competition, which only featured six dives, with a score of 178.50.
Metsala swam in all five events, finished in the Top 5 in all five events and placed third in the overall pentathlon points.
Metsala opened the day by posting a time of 1:01.73 in the 100-yard butterfly. That mark was good for a fifth-place finish in the event and is only .80 of a second off her school-record time. She then finished 10th in the 100-yard backstroke with a mark of 1:06.08.
Metsala recorded her top finishes at the meet in the 100-yard individual medley and 100-yard breaststroke. She clocked a 1:03.81 in the 100-yard IM and then touched the wall in 1:12.45 in the breaststroke.
Metsala finished off the day with a time of 57.18 which was good for fourth place in the 100-yard freestyle.
First-year swimmer Leah Enedy and senior Hailey Jaeger both finished in the Top 20 in the individual standings. Enedy was 11th and Jaeger finished 20th.
Enedy placed in the Top 16 in all five events with her best finish coming in the 100-yard breaststroke where she finished eighth in a time of 1:14.86.
Jaeger's top event came in the 100-yard freestyle where she placed 11th with a mark of 58.87. She was also in the Top 20 in the backstroke and butterfly.
The other Top 25 finish turned in by a Cobber came in the 100-yard breaststroke where senior Haley Imholte clocked a 1:20.66 and finished in the No.25 spot.
Concordia will have a 2-week break before returning to competition when they participate in the Univ. of Jamestown Knight Invite on Oct. 1-2.
