California Sunshine Comes Back Home In 7-2 Win
Concordia's three freshmen made the most of the their California training trip as they helped the Cobbers beat Minn.-Crookston 7-2.
GRAND FORKS, N.D. (3/08/15)—Concordia's spring break trip to California looked to be the perfect training method for the Cobbers as they returned home and beat Minn.-Crookston 7-2.
Concordia, playing in their first match since returning from The Golden State last week, won two of the three doubles matches and then claimed five of the six singles bouts to capture their second win of the season.
A trio of freshman made their mark against Crookston. First-year players Kendra Stoick, Susan Zniewski and Liz Elton all recorded milestone moments as they won their first collegiate matches – and all three the victories in convincing fashion. Stoick won 6-2 in the first set at No.3 singles and then found her game in the second and ended up winning 6-2, 6-0. She is now 1-4 for the year.
Zniewski, playing in her second collegiate singles match, rolled to a 6-0, 6-1 win at No.5 singles. She is now 1-1 on the year.
Not to be outdone by her first-year teammates, Elton recorded a smashing 6-1, 6-1 victory in her very first collegiate singles bout.
The most dramatic singles win of the day came at No.2 singles where Jade Haseltine tripped coming out of the starting block but then picked herself up and rallied to win at the finish line. Haseltine lost 6-1 in the first set but then evened the match with a 6-2 victory in set No.2. The opponents then went to the wire in the super-set tiebreaker with Haseltine edging out the 10-6 win. Haseltine is now 2-3 in singles play this year.
Taylor Peterson was responsible for the other singles win for the Cobbers. She eased to a 6-1, 6-0 victory at No.4 singles and is now 2-3 in 2015.
The Cobbers started the match by earning wins at No.2 and No.3 doubles. Haseltine teamed with Peterson to collect an 8-1 victory at No.2 doubles. The tandem now has a team-best two doubles victories on the year.
Morgan Sawatzke and Rose Reinert saw their only action of the day in the doubles competition and made the most of it by cruising to an 8-0 win at No.3 doubles. The victory is the first of the year for the doubles team.
Concordia will now return to MIAC play when they head south for a pair of matches next weekend. The Cobbers will face St. Mary's in Winona on Saturday, Mar. 14 and then square off against St. Olaf on Sunday, Mar. 15.
