Business As Usual At The Season Opener

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/31/15)—It was business as usual for All-American Cherae Reeves and the Concordia women's track and field team n the 2015 indoor season opener. Reeves won the shot put and CC posted a top 3 finish at the annual Cobber Duals meet.

Concordia finished the day with an 8-2 record and placed third at the meet.  

The four-time All-American in the shot put, Reeves opener her senior season by posting a distance of 48-02.75. That mark is less than five inches shy of her third-place distance at last year's NCAA Indoor Meet. Her distance at the Cobber Duals is already the third farthest in the NCAA this season. 

Reeves' shot put teammate Olivia Johnson put in one of the most dramatic athletic performances on the day. Johnson helped the Cobber women's basketball team beat Macalester and then hurried to the track where she claimed third place in the shot put. Johnson posted a distance of 41-00.25 which is a career-best indoor mark and fifth farthest in the conference this season.

Concordia has excelled in field events in recent history and the 2015 opener was no exception. The Cobbers had seven top 10 finishes in field events.

The high jump was the top event for CC on the day. The Cobbers placed four athletes in the top 10. Freshman Vanessa Johnson led all collegiate entrants as she cleared 5-04.25 and placed second. Johnson, the North Dakota High School Class B runner-up last year, is now tied for the second best height in the MIAC this season.

Johnson also placed 10th in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.99. That mark is in the top 15 of the conference this season.  

Anna Skow-Anderson was fifth in the high jump at 5-02.25 while Marissa Andersen was seventh and Kylee Fernholz placed ninth.

Mandy Mercil earned a ninth-place finish in the shot put to round out the top 10 field event place winners for Concordia.

Freshman Hannah Lundstrom and sophomore Mackenzie Randklev had the top track finishes for the Cobbers. Lundstrom was sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 27.37 and Randklev was fourth in the 1000 meters at 3:21.59.

Concordia will stay in the area as they continue with the 2015 indoor season. The Cobbers will step back into action when they compete at the NDSU Thundering Herd Classic on Feb. 6-7.
