Day Later Doesn't Matter To Cobbers

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (4/10/16)--- A pair of Cobber field athletes helped Concordia withstand a cold, windy day at the St. Benedict Invite. The meet was one of the first of the outdoor season for CC with a full team.

Juniors Mikayla Forness and Kristin Drechsel had multiple top 6 finishes for the Cobbers. Forness finished second in the javelin, fifth in the high jump and third in the 800 meters. Forness put up a distance of 125-03 in the javelin to place second. She cleared 5-0.25 in the high jump and raced to a 2:26.67 in the 800 meters.    

Drechsel placed in the top 6 in three of the four throwing events. She was second in the discus, fifth in the hammer and sixth in the shot put. Drechsel's top finish came in the discus where she had a mark of 120-0 in her third attempt. That mark is the fourth farthest in the MIAC this season. She came away with a finishing distance of 133-0 in the hammer and 37-09.25 in the shot put. Both marks push her into the top 7 in the conference.

Besides Forness' third-place finish in the 800 meters, Mara Jungels, Maria West, Sarah Curran, Brianna Gruenberg, Sarah Kuball , Tarja Nelsen and Jenna Stilwell had top 10 finishes in track events at the CSB Invite.

Jungels ran a 27.62 in the 200 meters and placed eighth. West was ninth in the 800 meters (2:32.33) and seventh in the 1500 meters (5:13.58). Curran and Gruenberg led a quartet of top 10 finishes in the 5000 meters. Curran was third at 19:21.61. Gruenberg was right behind Curran in fourth place with a time of 19:22.17 while Kuball was ninth at 20:36.34 and Nelsen 10th at 20:59.85.

Stillwell placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles and also had top 10 finishes in the javelin and long jump. She raced to a finishing time of 16.32 in the hurdles, had a distance of 120-06 which was good for third in the javelin and placed fifth in the long jump at 16-06.50. Her time in the 100-meter hurdles is a season best.

Sophomores Bailey Hovland and Vanessa Johnson had the other top field finishes for Concordia. Hovland placed third in the discus with a mark of 116-02 and was seventh in the hammer at 123-07. Both her distances are season bests and in the top 10 of the MIAC this year. Johnson, who earned All-Conference honors at the MIAC Indoor Meet in the high jump this season, cleared the bar at 5-04.25 and was second in the event at the CSB Invite. Her height is the top mark in the MIAC this year.                 

Concordia will be hoping to avoid its third straight postponed meet of the outsdoor season when they compete in the Lee Krough Invitational at Gustavus on Saturday, Apr. 16 starting at 10 a.m.
