A Winning Season Opener
Concordia used their overall team depth to post a perfect 9-0 record and win the season-opening Cobber Duals.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/28/17)--- Concordia opened the 2017 season by winning the annual Cobber Duals Meet. Concordia posted a perfect 9-0 record against the other nine teams at the meet.
The Cobbers used their overall team depth to record all nine wins. CC had 13 different Top 5 finishes at the event and earned a narrow 89-87 win over cross-town rival MSU Moorhead in the closest dual of the meet.
Concordia was led by athletes on opposite ends of the collegiate career spectrum. Senior Emma Peterson won the triple jump and freshman Isabel Andriessen earned a win in her very first collegiate event in the 600 meters. The pair posted the only even wins on the day for CC.
Peterson, who earned All-American honors in the high jump during last year's outdoor season, posted a distance of 36-05.00 in the triple jump to win the event by a full foot. Her winning leap is the seventh best in Concordia program history and the farthest in the MIAC this season.
Peterson also recorded a Top 5 finish in the high jump where she cleared the bar at 5-03.75 and placed second. Her height tied for the top mark in the event but she finished second due to misses at lower heights.
Andriessen is no stranger to college sports as she was a member of the Cobber cross country team in the fall. She wasted little time in making her mark in her first indoor season by running a 1:44.20 in the 600 meters and winning the race by .89 seconds. Her time is already in the Top 15 of the conference.
Andriessen was joined by two other teammates in the Top 5 in the 600 meters. Senior Mikayla Forness finished third with a mark of 1:46.34 and Elizabeth Vought was fifth with a personal best time of 1:51.70.
Hannah Lundstrom started her junior season by racing to a time of 8.15 in the 60-meter dash and finishing fourth. That mark is ninth fastest in the MIAC this year.
The distance races were kind to the Cobbers with five different athletes recording Top 5 finishes. Maria West and Kara Andersen had third place finishes. West was third in the 1000 meters at 3:10.23 and Andersen third in the mile run at 5:30.99.
Brianna Gruenberg had a Top 5 finish in the 3000 meters and Tarja Nelsen was fifth in the 5K.
A pair of freshmen started their collegiate careers on high notes in field events. Tierza Engen jumped 4-09.75 in the high jump and placed fourth while Mollie Francis was third in the long jump with a mark of 15-09.50. Both those marks are in the Top 15 of the MIAC.
The Cobbers had one other event win at the meet and that came in the distance medley relay. The quartet of West, Sara Whiteman, Andiessen and Andersen ran a 13:36.81 to win the event by over 15 seconds.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will head into Fargo to compete in the Bison Open on Friday, Feb. 3 and Saturday, Feb. 4. CC will then face their first MIAC competition when they take part in the St. Benedict Quadrangular on Saturday, Feb. 11 in Collegeville.
