A Near-Perfect Cobber Twilight
On a near-perfect day for the Cobber Twilight Meet, senior Bailey Hovland had a near-perfect three-event performance.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/25/18)---On a near-perfect day for a meet, senior Bailey Hovland had a near-perfect three-event performance.
Hovland broke her own school record in the hammer throw, posted the second farthest distance in the MIAC in the discus and recorded another Top 10 conference mark in the shot put at the annual Cobber Twilight Meet.
The diminutive Willmar native continues to excel in all throwing events this outdoor season as she makes a bid for her first career NCAA National Meet appearance.
Hovland started her day by breaking her two-week old record in the hammer throw. She went for a distance of 170-10 on her second attempt which bettered her old mark of 170-01. Hovland's distance of 170-10 was good for second place behind NCAA Division I scholarship athlete Hannah Frost of North Dakota.
Hovland's hammer throw distance is tops in the conference this year and the ninth best in Division III.
Hovland then made her way to the discus cage where she finished third with a distance of 136-08. That mark is a career best and currently the second farthest distance in the MIAC this year.
Hovland finished off the Twilight Meet in the twilight as she placed 10th in the shot put with a mark of 35-07.25. Her distance is four feet off her conference-best mark of 39-04 which she put up on Saturday at the Cobber Snownami Open.
Hovland's throwing crew companions also had stellar marks at the Twilight Meet. Sophomore Kelsey Rajewsky finished second in the shot put with a career-best distance of 39-01.75. Senior Emily Albers also recorded a career best in the event as she finished with a distance of 36-02.75 which was good for seventh place.
Rajewsky's mark is second best in the MIAC this year and Albers is currently No.7 on the league's season list.
Rajewsky and Albers also recorded season-best marks in the hammer. Rajewsky had a distance of 137-03 while Albers finished at 110-09. Both marks are in the Top 20 of the MIAC this year.
Miriah Forness and Elli Strand both had Top 15 MIAC distances in the javelin at the Twilight Meet. Forness posted 94-10 and is 14th while Strand is 15th at 94-02.
The other Top 15 MIAC field event mark came in the high jump where sophomore Tierza Engen cleared a season-best 5-0.25 and finished in third place.
Concordia had a pair of track athletes post conference Top 25 times. Karly Mayo clipped the line in 13.29 in the 100 meters which is the 19th fastest in the MIAC this year. Senior Maria West clocked a 4:59.88 in the 1500 and sits in the No.23 spot in the MIAC.
WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia will finally hit the road for the first time in the outdoor season. The Cobbers will send a select crew to the Drake Relays on Apr. 27-28 and participate as a team in the Ron Masanz Meet held at MSU Moorhead on Saturday, Apr. 28.
