Sunday Dual-Meet Battle With St. Ben's
Concordia recorded five event wins and five second-place finishes in their dual meet with St. Benedict but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Bennies 10 events wins and the Cobbers lost 91-64.
COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. (2/28/21)---Concordia recorded five event wins and five second-place finishes in their dual meet with St. Benedict but it wasn't enough to overcome the Bennies 10 events wins and the Cobbers lost 91-64.
Cayle Hovland continued her outstanding junior season by winning both throw events. Avery Kenning was the other event winner in the field events as she won the long jump. Nicole Lilleberg claimed the victory in the 60-meter hurdles while Carly Fornshell earned the win in the 400 for the two track event titles.
Hovland, who currently holds the top mark in the MIAC in the shot put, won both the shot put and weight throw on Sunday. Her distance in the shot was 42-07.50 which won the event by over 3-feet. That mark is shy of her season-best distance of 43-09.75 which is No.1 in the conference and No.8 in Division III. Hovland capped off her day by winning the weight throw with a distance of 51-07.50 which was 3-06.25 farther than the runner-up mark. Her winning throw is only 5.5 inches shy of her season best which is No. 4 in the MIAC and No.23 in the country.
Sophomore Jacey Schlosser was one of the five runner-up finishers for the Cobbers on the day as she placed second in the shot put. Schlosser posted a distance of 39-01.00. She was also fifth in the weight throw at 42-02.00. Teammate Emily White was third in the weight with a PR distance of 42-11.50.
Kenning claimed the win in the long jump with a season-best distance of 15-04.25. That mark puts the sophomore from Annandale just outside the Top 15 in the conference. Freshman Greta Larson was second in the event with a season-best mark of 11-08.50.
Lilleberg won the 60-meter hurdles by being the only athlete in the field to break the 10-second mark. She cruised to a 9.91 which is her fastest time of the season and the No.8 mark in the conference.
Fornshell capped off the event wins for the Cobbers. She clocked a 1:02.54 to beat teammate Isabel Fredrickson by 3.31 seconds. Both finishing times are season bests for the CC athletes. Fornshell's time pushes her into the Top of the conference.
Perhaps the biggest performance of the track events came from a second-place finish. Senior Josie Herrmann, who owns the second fastest time in Division III in the 800 meters, ran a 5:06.72 in the mile which is the second fastest time in school history. Her finishing mark was only 1.40 seconds off the Cobber record set by Natalie Hanson in 2006.
UP NEXT: Concordia will return to Collegeville next weekend to take part in the St. John's Invitational on Saturday, Mar. 6 at 11 a.m.
