Javelin U Throws Cobbers Into Lead At MIAC Meet
Concordia had five athletes finish in the Top 7 of the javelin, which gave the Cobbers 30 team points and helped them into the lead after Day 1 at the MIAC Meet. First-year athlete Kaia Gack won the javeling with Genevieve Gruba second and Regan Anderson third.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (5/09/25)---Concordia College has petitioned the MIAC to change its name to Javelin University.
The Cobbers posted the rare 1-2-3-5-7 finish in the javelin competition on Friday at the MIAC Championship Meet. The 30 team points scored in the event threw Concordia into first place in the team standings after Day 1 at the conference meet.
Concordia has 67 team points after eight of the 23 total events. That total is 3.0 points ahead of second-place St. Olaf and 17.5 points ahead of third-place Gustavus.
Not only did the Cobbers place five athletes in the Top 7 of the javelin, they also had a first-year athlete win the conference event for the second straight year. Heading into the MIAC Meet, sophomore Genevieve Gruba was the frontrunner to win the event, as she was seeded No.1 and was the defending MIAC champion. Unfortunately for Gruba, teammate Kaia Gack decided to have the meet of her first college outdoor season and beat Gruba by over three feet.
Gack claimed the MIAC title on her very last attempt of the finals. She entered the sixth round of throws in fifth place and proceeded to post a winning distance of 127-11.
Gack wasn't the only Cobber to save her best for last in the event. Senior Regan Anderson capped her collegiate javelin career by recording a distance of 118-04, which was good for third place.
Multi-Event standout Peyton Selle also had her best mark of the day in Round 6. She climbed into fifth place with a throw of 115-05.
Gruba finished in second place and got her best distance of the event in the fifth round. She had a mark of 124-03.
Haley Wolsky was the final member of the Concordia quintet to score team points. She placed seventh with a mark of 107-03.
Selle also scored team points in the long jump. She placed seventh with a distance of 17-04.00.
MIAC heptathlon champion Jenna Kalevik was sixth in the long jump at 17-06.75.
The remainder of the Concordia team points on Friday came from track events.
The first-year distance duo of Brooklyn Hart and Ashley Nelson both earned MIAC All-Conference Honorable Mention honors in their first outdoor championship meet. Hart ran a 39.46.21 and placed fourth in the 10,000 meters, and Nelson was less than 12 seconds behind Hart with a time of 39.57.63 and finished in sixth place.
The Cobber 4x800-meter relay team of Drew Frolek, Kelyn Henry-Perlich, Kyla Nygaard and Meg Shercliffe crossed the line in a time of 9:25.89, which was good for second place and eight team points.
Frolek, Nygaard and Shercliffe were three of the nine qualifiers for the finals from Friday's prelim events.
Frolek and Nygaard qualified for the finals in the 800 meters, while Shercliffe will run in the finals of the 400-meter hurdles.
Emily Rengo and Andie Sandman pulled the double finals' qualifying marks. Both athletes will compete in the finals of the 100 and 200 meters on Saturday.
Kalevik and Selle both qualified for the finals by posting Top 5 qualifying times in the 100-meter hurdles.
Concordia will look to continue its successful ways on Day 2 of the MIAC Meet on Saturday, May 10 at 12 p.m. at Macalester.
