Concordia beat St. Olaf 3-1 to clinch its 13th consecutive MIAC playoff berth. The Cobbers became the first league team to earn a spot in postseason play.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/19/13)—Concordia beat St. Olaf 3-1 (25-18, 25-19, 19-25, 25-10) to clinch its 13th consecutive MIAC playoff berth. The Cobbers remained perfect in the MIAC and became the first league team to earn a spot in postseason play.
Concordia is now 8-0 in the MIAC and remains atop the conference standings. The Cobbers, who have three league matches left in the regular season, are now 17-7 overall.
The Cobbers earned the playoff asterisk by turning up the defense for the second straight match. CC held St. Olaf to a .018 attack percentage for the match and had 11 team blocks as they won for the second time in less than 24 hours. Concordia used a stifling defense in the final two sets on Friday night to beat Gustavus 3-2. The 11 blocks marks only the fourth time this season that CC has had 10 or more blocks in a match. The Cobbers also had 94 total digs which ties for the second highest team total in 2013.
Concordia had three players with at least three blocks in the match. Senior Kayla Hampton led the way with six blocks while Heather Beaner and Anna Skow-Anderson had three stuffs each.
The Cobbers' only hiccup in the match came in the third set when they hit only .044 and allowed the Oles to come away with a .205 attack percentage.
Concordia trailed briefly for only two points in the first two sets, never led in the third set and then led from wire-to-wire in the fourth, and final, set.
The Cobbers had four players with at least seven kills and were led by Kynndyl Ross who had 10 winners. Hampton and Kelly Reed came away with eight kills and Angie Waller added seven. Waller also had 22 digs and two blocks. Mandy Mercil captained the Cobbers' winning offense. She had 24 assists and has a team-high 608 assists on the season. Alyssa Schmidt recorded a team-high 24 digs and was one of four CC players with double-digit kill totals. Courtney Sheets and Jena Klaphake had 10 digs each.
Concordia will continue its trek towards the MIAC regular-season title when they host Macalester on Tuesday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m.
