EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (9/19/14)—Concordia split its opening two matches of the Sandy Schumacher Memorial Tournament hosted by Wis.-Eau Claire on Friday. The Cobbers fell in five sets to St. Norbert but then came back to beat Wisconsin Lutheran 3-1.
The front line tandem of Kelly Reed and Kathleen Lippert led Concordia on Friday. Reed combined for 19 kills in the two matches while Lippert had a career-high 14 kills against St. Norbert and finished with 18 winners on the day.
Concordia opened the day with a 25-19 over St. Norbert in the opening set. CC then dropped the second set 27-17 before coming away with a 25-18 win in the third set. The Cobbers led 19-13 in the fourth set before the Green Knights went on a 8-2 run to tie the set at 21-21. Concordia won the next point but was then held scoreless as St. Norbert rattled off four straight points to win 25-22.
The Cobbers were unable to get back on track in the fifth set and lost 15-10.
Concordia didn't allow a repeat performance of the first match in the final match of the day against Wisconsin Lutheran. CC opened with a 26-24 win, lost the second set but then roared ahead to take the third set 25-23 and the fourth set 25-20.
The Cobbers will finish off the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 20 when they play host Wis.-Eau Claire at 10 a.m. and then Carroll (Wis.) at 12:15 p.m.
