Another Long Distance One-Day Split

ST. PETER, Minn. (9/20/15)— The Concordia long-distance warriors split their second consecutive one-day tournament road trip. The Cobbers traveled 290 miles to play in the Gustavus Quadrangular and dropped a tough 3-2 (19-25, 25-20, 24-26, 25-22, 11-15) decision to Wis.-Stout before sweeping Luther 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 26-24).  

The 580 round trip extravaganza came on the heels of traveling 900 miles to play two matches in one day last weekend at Stevens Point, Wis. CC also split their two games at Stevens Point and is now 7-3 in all matches this year. The Cobbers have won four of their last six matches.

Senior Olivia Wangensteen led the Concordia offense for the second road-trip weekend. Wangensteen had 28 kills in the two matches and had 97 total attacks on the day. She also 28 digs. Wangensteen started the day with a season-high 20 kills against the Blue Devils and had eight in the three-macth sweep over Luther. Wangensteen now has 713 kills and 729 digs in her career.  

Fellow senior Anna Skow-Anderson was the only other Cobber to reach the 20-kill mark for the day. She had 21 kills, hit a team-best .226 and also had five blocks. Skow-Anderson had 10 winners and four blocks against Stout and then added 11 kills and block vs. the Norse.     

Mandy Mercil directed the offense and recorded a team-high 60 assists. She had a season-high 33 helpers in the first match and added 27 in the second match. Her 33 assists vs. Stout marked the first time since 2013 that she had eclipsed the 30-assist mark. Mercil also collected 23 digs for the day.   

Kathleen Lippert had a team-high seven blocks on Saturday and Korbyn Ross came away with 53 digs in the two matches. Lippert had a season-high five blocks against Stout and Ross had 29 digs vs. Luther. The 29 digs tied a season high.           

WHAT'S NEXT: Concordia has to get back on the bus for a midweek road trip to Augsburg but then gets to stay at home over the weekend when they host Hamline on Saturday, Sept. 26 at 3 p.m.
