Offense Then Pitching Propel Cobbers To Sweep Over Rams
It was a tale of two games in the Cobbers’ first doubleheader in Minnesota. The Cobbers used 17-run, 13-hit offensive attack in Game1 to post a 17-4 victory against North Central and then got a 7-inning, 2-hit shutout performance from pitchers Brett Trutwin, J Riley Ohm, Wyatt Mohr and Ethan Beyer to collect a 5-0 win in the second game against the Rams.
ST. PAUL, Minn. (3/14/25)---It was a tale of two games in the Cobbers' first doubleheader in Minnesota. The Cobbers used 17-run, 13-hit offensive attack in Game1 to post a 17-4 victory against North Central and then got a 7-inning, 2-hit shutout performance from pitchers Ben Trutwin, J Riley Ohm, Wyatt Mohr and Ethan Beyer to collect a 5-0 win in the second game against the Rams.
The doubleheader sweep moves Concordia's overall season record above the .500 mark. CC is now 7-6 on the year.
Game 1: Concordia 17, North Central 4
The Cobbers actually trailed 2-0 after the first inning and then 3-0 heading into the bottom of the second before they unleashed four crooked number innings en route to the 13-run win. Concordia scored four times in the bottom of the second to take a 4-3 lead. They added two more in the fourth, fourth in the fifth and blew the game open with a touchdown in the sixth.
The Top 4 in the Cobber batting order did most of the damage on the scoreboard. All four hitters had two hits, drove in at least two runs and had at least one extra-base hit.
Leadoff hitter Caiden Kjelstrom went 2-for-4, scored two runs and had a double.
Thomas Horan, the everyday No.2 hitter, was 2-for-4 with four RBI, two runs, a triple and a double.
The long ball power was supplied by the No.3 and No.4 hitters. Ben Shumansky launched his team-leading second home run in the 7-run sixth frame. He finished the opener by going 2-for-3 with three RBI and two runs scored. David Dorsey connected on his first homer of the season in the fourth inning. It was a 2-run shot and gave CC a 6-3 lead. He went 2-for-4 with two RBI.
Dylan Gertken and Wyatt Gunkel also had 2-RBI games for Concordia.
Concordia used four pitchers in Game 1. Dylan Inniger went the first 1.2 innings. He was replaced by freshman Brayden Wolfgram, who didn't allow a hit and struck out four in 3.1 innings of work. He earned the win for CC, which was his second of the year. Wolfgram has now pitched in 9.0 innings this season and has yet to give up an earned run.
Gavin Gast and Brock Anderson finished off the game. Gast pitched the sixth and didn't concede a hit and Anderson threw the seventh inning.
Game 2: Concordia 5, North Central 0
The Cobbers never trailed in the finale, but the game was in the balance until sixth. CC scored a single run in the first on a Dorsey 1-out single that plated Kjelstrom.
The key point of the game came in the bottom of the third with the Cobbers holding a 1-0 lead. North Central loaded the bases with one out, but then Trutwin was able to get the ever-popular 6-4-3 double play ground ball to get out of the inning with CC's 1-run lead intact.
Concordia went on to score a single run in the top of the fourth and then three more in the sixth to cement the 5-run win.
Kjelstrom had another 2-hit game at the top of the order. He was 2-for-2 and scored two of the team's five runs. Horan and a pair of first-year players Luke Knudsen and Talan Plante all had a single hit.
Plante came through with the "feel good" moment of the day. Playing in his first college game, he deposited a 2-out pitch over the center-field fence for his first collegiate hit and first extra-base hit.
Trutwin went the first 4.0 innings, allowed two hits and didn't give up a run. He struck out three to earn his first win of the year.
Ohm followed Trutwin and pitched 1.1 innings. He had complete command of his "A" stuff and didn't give up a hit.
Mohr and Beyer got the final five outs and didn't give up a hit.
Concordia will have a 2-week break before opening conference play on Saturday, Mar. 29 at St. Mary's.
