Cobbers Drop A Pair To Buena Vista
Concordia took a break from MIAC play to host American Rivers Conference leader Buena Vista in a doubleheader. The Cobbers were never able to find their rhythm and lost 7-2 and 14-1.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/13/25)---Concordia took a break from MIAC play to host American Rivers Conference leader Buena Vista in a doubleheader.
The Cobbers were never able to find their rhythm and lost 7-2 and 14-1. The two losses evens Concordia's overall record at 13-13. The Beavers win for the seventh time in the last eight games and are now 21-6 for the season.
Game 1: Concordia 2, Buena Vista 7
The opener was tied at 1-1 heading into the top of the third innings, but then Buena Vista scored twice in the third, three more times in fifth, and finished off the scoring with a lone run in the seventh.
The Cobbers tied the game in the second inning when Wyatt Gunkel's ground ball brought home Luke Van Erp.
Concordia's other run in Game 1 came in the seventh on a foul out off the bat of Gunkel.
The Cobbers had five hits in the first game with Van Erp leading the way by going 2-for-3. Caiden Kjelstrom, Thomas Horan and Drew Dorsey had the other base hits for CC.
Ben Trutwin, Brett Engelmeyer and Cullen Norland all pitched at least 2.0 innings in the game. Trutwin got the start and lasted 3.0 innings. He allowed two earned runs on two hits.
Game 2: Concordia 1, Buena Vista 14
The Cobbers' lone run in the finale came in the first inning and cut BVU's lead to 2-1. Ben Shumansky's single up the middle plated Kjelstrom, who led off the frame with a double to left-center field.
Concordia had three hits in Game 2. Besides the double by Kjelstrom and the single by Shumansky, David Dorsey recorded a leadoff double to start the fourth inning.
Grant Paffrath, Thad Lieser, Aaron Ver Steeg and Skylar Timmer combined to pitched the 7.0 innings for the Cobbers.
Record Watch: Horan had a single hit on the day and now has 196 career hits. He needs two more to break the all-time program record of 197 set by Andy Gravdahl.
100-Club Watch: Kjelstrom was the only CC player to have a hit in both games. He was 2-for-6 on the day and has 96 career hits. David Dorsey had the double in Game 2 and has 91 career hits.
Concordia will return to MIAC play when they host Augsburg in a key conference match-up on Tuesday, Apr. 15 at 2:30 p.m.
