Record-Setting Home Streak Comes To A Close
MOORHEAD, Minn. (4/23/25)---Concordia finished off its record-setting home stand by dropping a pair of games against Gustavus.
The Cobbers lost 12-2 and 13-4 to cap off a 13-game consecutive home game streak. The 13 straight home games are the most in program history and the most consecutive home games of any school in the history of the MIAC. Concordia played the record-setting 13 straight home games in 13 days from Apr. 10 until Wednesday.
Concordia was done in by big-run innings and key hits with the bases loaded. Gustavus posted six multiple-run innings, and the Cobbers conceded 11 runs after the Gusties loaded the bases. GAC had three 5-run innings, posted a pair of 4-run frames and hit a grand slam in each game.
The two defeats drop Concordia's record to 17-16 on the year. CC is now 8-8 in MIAC play. The Cobbers finished the 13-game home stand with a winning record at 7-6.
Game 1: Concordia 2, Gustavus 12
The Cobbers trailed 2-0 heading into the fourth inning in Game 1, but then Gustavus hit a pair of home runs, including its first grand slam of the day, to put up a 5-run fourth. They added five more runs on four hits in the seventh inning before Concordia struck for their two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
Concordia had seven hits in the opener and had traffic on the base paths in all but two innings, but couldn't connect hits and finished the game by going 3-for-13 with runners on base.
The Cobbers' two runs came courtesy of a wild pitch that allowed Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe to score after he opened the seventh with a single. David Dorsey drove home the second run when he smashed a double to right center, which scored Ben Shumansky from second base.
Brayden Wolfgram had the only multi-hit game in the opener. He went 2-for-2.
Game 2: Concordia 4, Gustavus 13
Concordia held a 2-0 lead after three innings of play, but once again fell victim to a fourth-inning grand slam. Gustavus scored five times in the fourth for the second straight game then added 4-run frames in the sixth and ninth innings to post the 13-4 win.
Drew Dorsey's single plated his brother to give Concordia a 1-0 lead after David Dorsey came up with a 1-out double in the second inning.
CC doubled their lead when Thomas Horan came around to score after he reached base on a fielder's choice. Henkemeyer had the RBO that put Concordia up 2-0.
The Cobbers were able to cut the Gustie lead down to two runs when they scored a single run in the bottom of the fourth. Luke Knudsen's single to left field scored Drew Dorsey after Dorsey doubled to left center.
Concordia's final run came in the ninth. Shumansky scored his second run of the day when he singled and raced home on a Mason Henry triple.
The Cobbers had 11 hits in Game 2 with Caiden Kjelstrom leading the offense by going 3-for-4. Knudsen and Drew Dorsey both had 2-hit games.
Gavin Gast and Ethan Beyer had the most success of the five Cobber pitchers in the finale. Gast threw a 1-2-3 seventh inning and Beyer retired all three batters he faced in the eighth inning.
100-Hit Watch: David Dorsey had a single hit in each game of the DH and has 99 career hits. He needs one more base knock to become the 32nd player in Cobber hostory to reach the 100-hit milestone.
Concordia will hit the road for the first time since Apr. 9 when they play at Carleton on Saturday, Apr. 26 at 1 p.m.
