Johnson and Nelson helped Concordia post a 9-11 record in the MIAC and finish in a tie for 7th-place in the final league standings. Both, the number of conference wins and the placement in the standings, are the best since the 2017 campaign.
Johnson, who led the team in scoring in 2023, earns the first conference postseason honor of his career. He averaged 17.6 points per game in his 18 MIAC games. He finished eighth in the league in scoring average.
Johnson scored in double figures in the final 10 games of the year, put up at least 20 points in nine games and had a season-high MIAC point total of 27 against St. Mary's on Dec. 10.
Johnson's ability to knock down clutch long-range shots helped the Cobbers throughout the season. He finished tied for third in the MIAC in 3-point field goals per game (2.8/game) and was fourth in 3-point percentage (43.9%).
Johnson finished the year with 50 3-point field goals. His biggest long-range shot came in the season finale when he knocked down a 40-foot shot with .08 of a second left in the game to beat Hamline.
Nelson adds to his list of postseason achievements. As a freshman in 2022, Nelson was named the MIAC All-Conference and All-Rookie teams. He was the first player in program history to be named to both teams in a single season. He also earned CSC Academic All-District honors earlier in the month.
Nelson played in all 20 league games in 2023, and recorded a double-digit scoring total in 19 of the 20 contests. He finished the year with a 13.9 ppg average in MIAC play which was 13th highest in the conference. His top point production came at Augsburg on Dec. 7 when he dropped 24 on the Auggies.
Nelson led the team in rebounding with a 5.9 rebounds per game average. That total was good for the No.12 spot on the conference list.
