A Senior Day Overtime Thriller
The Cobbers finished off the regular season in style as they overcame a 6-point deficit in the final 2:20 of regulation and beat Carleton 82-73 in an overtime thriller. The fact that it was the annual Senior Day Celebration game made the comeback win even more special and sends Concordia into the postseason having won three of its last four games.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/22/25)---The Cobbers finished off the regular season in style as they overcame a 6-point deficit in the final 2:20 of regulation and beat Carleton 82-73 in an overtime thriller.
The fact that it was the annual Senior Day Celebration game made the comeback win even more special and sends Concordia into the postseason having won three of its last four games.
The Cobbers close out the regular season with an 8-8 record in conference play and a 12-13 overall record. CC will enter the MIAC playoffs as the No.6 seed and play at Hamline on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 5 p.m.
Carleton, who will be the No.4 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, is now 16-9 in all games and 9-7 in the MIAC.
The Knights led for all but 31 seconds of the first half. They threatened to run away with the game towards the end of the first period after building up a 15-point lead with 3:30 left in the half.
The end of the first half was one of the key points in the game as Concordia went on a 10-2 run and went into the locker room only down by seven points at 34-27.
The Cobbers scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half and the battle was on. CC took its first lead of the game at the 16:40 mark and the game had four tie scores in the final 11:45 of play.
The game was tied at 64-64 in the final minute of play when Peyton Belka made a huge shot as time ran out on the possession clock. The Knights were able to send the game into OT by getting free underneath and connecting on a lay-up just before the buzzer sounded.
The extra session was all maroon and gold. The Cobbers scored the first five points of OT and pushed the lead to double digits at the 1:14 mark. Concordia ended up going 6-for-9 from the floor and made 1-of-3 shots from outside the arc in the extra 5 minutes. The Knights went 2-for-8 and were 0-for-1 from distance.
Sophomore guard Kaden Pieper put up career numbers in the regular-season finale. He went 9-for-13 from the floor and posted a career-high 26 points. He also grabbed five rebounds.
Junior Jackson Loge came away with his 11th double-double of the year. He scored 15 points and had a game-high 14 rebounds.
Senior Rowan Nelson went for 19 points and six assists. He now has 1,396 points, which is the third most in program history and the most by a player since 1970.
Justin Courneya was the fourth player for CC to score in double figures. Like Pieper, he put up a career-high point total as he finished with 12 points. He entered Saturday having only scored a total of three points in the entire season.
Concordia will head to St. Paul to start the postseason. The Cobber will play at Hamline on Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 5 p.m.
