3-Goal Comeback Thwarted In Final Minute
Concordia staged a 3-goal rally in the second half of their series finale against Gustavus only to have the Gusties claim the game-winning goal in the final minute of the third period.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/23/24)---Concordia staged a 3-goal rally in the second half of their series finale against Gustavus only to have the Gusties claim the game-winning goal in the final minute of the third period.
The Cobbers trailed 3-0 midway through the second period but then scored three consecutive goals finishing with an empty-net strike with 1:12 left in regulation. Unfortunately for CC, the momentum and comeback stopped there as Gustavus scored on a shot from the goal line only 27 seconds later to earn the 4-3 win.
The victory gave the Gusties the sweep in the series and evens the Cobbers' overall record at 4-4-0. CC is 1-3-0 in the MIAC. Gustavus wins its third straight and is now 3-3-0 in all games and 3-1-0 in conference play.
Like Friday's game, Concordia fell behind 2-0 in the first period. The allowed goals at 5:55 and 16:25 and trailed by the two goals heading into the first break.
Gustavus built the lead to three goals with a strike in the seventh minute of the second period.
The Cobbers started their comeback path at the 10:09 mark when Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe netted his third goal of the season. Henkemeyer-Howe did all the work on Concordia's opener as he went end-to-end with the puck and snapped home a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle. Tal Halliday was gifted the assist as he let Henkemeyer-Howe take the puck off his stick from behind the CC goal.
The score would stay at 3-1 through the end of the second period before Concordia was able to push the drama level into high gear with a goal in the first minute of the third frame.
Hunter Olson set up the Cobbers' second goal when he got the puck behind the Gustie goal and threw it out front to a wide-open Hanson O'Leary who 1-timed the pass into the open net.
The goal at 23 seconds was O'Leary's third of the year with Olson picking up his fourth assist of the year. Ben Luedtke got the second assist on the goal.
The second goal set the stage for an intense third period which culminated in the dramatic 2-goal finish.
Cole Lehmann tied the game with a shot from the point. The goal was his first of the year with Olson and Caden Triggs getting the helpers. The assist for Olson was his team-leading fifth of the year.
Concordia outshot Gustavus 34-29 for the game which included a 27-16 margin for the final 40 minutes of play.
Hunter Bjorge led the Cobbers with five shots and sophomore goalie Dane Couture made 25 saves.
Concordia will face Hamline in a non-conference game on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. at the TRIA Rink in St. Paul.
