Playoff-Style Series Opener Ends In Stalemate
It was a game befitting a playoff battle in March. Concordia’s series opener with St. Olaf had it all – early goals, lead changes, a late goal to send the game into overtime and then plenty of action in the extra session. The Cobbers and Oles fought through 65 minutes of play without deciding a winner as the teams skated to a 3-3 tie.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/24/25)---It was a game befitting a playoff battle in March. Concordia's series opener with St. Olaf had it all – early goals, lead changes, a late goal to send the game into overtime and then plenty of action in the extra session.
The Cobbers and Oles fought through 65 minutes of play without deciding a winner as the teams skated to a 3-3 tie. St. Olaf was able to earn the extra point in the standings by virtue of a 1-0 win in the shootout.
The tie game moves the Cobbers' record to 7-9-2 in all games and 3-4-2 in conference play. CC remains unbeaten in its last three games.
Concordia bolted out of the gate when senior Adam Brown got behind the St. Olaf defense and scored on a breakaway. The goal at 2:27 was Brown's second of the season. Troy Dahlheimer and Matthew Hard earned the assists on the game's first goal.
St. Olaf (7-6-3, 2-4-1 MIAC) was able to tie the game for the first time midway through the opening period and the teams skated into the locker room deadlocked at 1-1.
The Oles were able to score the next two goals in the game and appeared to be headed for the win but the Cobbers' showed their resiliency by coming up with two goals in a span of 4 minutes in the final half of the third period.
St. Olaf took their first lead of the game at 4:22 of the second period and added a third in the first five minutes of the final frame.
Junior forward Caden Triggs started the comeback trail when he tapped in a pass from Hanson O'Leary on the left side of the net. Triggs was left wide open and O'Leary found him after Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe won the faceoff in the Oles' zone and then battled to win the puck behind the net.
The goal at 11:26 was Triggs' fourth of the season with O'Leary getting his third helper of the year and Henkemeyer-Howe posting his team-leading ninth assist.
The game stayed at 3-2 until the 15:09 mark of the third period. Concordia used a fierce forecheck to keep the puck in the Oles' zone. Junior Joe Harguindeguy eventually won control of the puck and fired a cross-ice pass to defenseman Jackson Lucia who took the pass, walked around the St. Olaf goal and scored on the delayed wrap-around.
The goal was Lucia's first collegiate strike and set the stage for a dramatic final 4 minutes of play.
Both teams had chances late in the third period and into overtime but neither could create the game-winning goal.
St. Olaf held a 26-22 advantage in shots on goal and neither team was able to score on the power play.
Tucker Skime led CC with four shots on goal.
MIAC Defensive Player of the Week Dane Couture stopped 23 shots for CC.
The two teams will conclude their 2-game series on Saturday, Jan. 25 at 2 p.m. at the Moorhead Sports Center.
