What A Difference A Month Makes
What a difference a month makes. Four weeks ago Concordia was near the bottom of the MIAC and had won only once in their past 10 games. Fast forward to Saturday when the Cobbers erased a 4-1 deficit, beat Hamline 6-4 and haven't lost in six games.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/8/25)---What a difference a month makes. Four weeks ago Concordia was near the bottom of the MIAC, had won only once in their past 10 games and was coming off a pair of losses in Wisconsin.
Fast forward to Saturday afternoon and suddenly the Cobbers are unbeaten in their last six games and have moved all the way up to fourth place in the conference standings.
The latest episode in the Cobbers' comeback campaign was a 3-goal turnaround which saw Concordia trail 4-1 after one period only to score five unanswered goals and post a 6-4 win to earn the sweep over Hamline.
The victory also pushes the Cobbers' overall record above the .500 level for the first time since the end of November. CC is now 10-9-2 in all games and 6-4-2 in the MIAC. They have 19 league points which puts them in a tie with St. Scholastica in the No.4 spot. Concordia is now only one point out of third place and two points behind second place.
The first period was not one to remember for Concordia. They gave up four goals, including two on a power play after taking a 5-minute major penalty, and were outshot 8-5.
The game turned 180 degrees in the second period. The Cobbers outshot the Pipers 13-2 and tied the game with a goal in the third minute of play and two more in the final 6:12 of the second stanza.
Mason Plante posted his second goal of the game at 2:19 to bring Concordia within two goals and suddenly Uncle Momentum was walking towards the Cobber locker room.
Mr. Momentum stepped inside the Cobbers' room when Ben Luedtke made it 4-3 at 13:48 and Tal Halliday tied the game at 15:54. Both players picked up their third goals of the season and the teams headed to the second intermission all knotted at 4-4.
Hunter Olson recorded the game-winning goal when he 1-timed a shot a carom from the back boards into the net. First-year defenseman Jackson Lucia shot the puck wide off the net and it caromed straight to OIson who was standing on the right side of the goal.
The goal at 3:15 was Olson's second of the weekend and fifth of the season. Lucia and Halliday earned the assists on the game winner. For Lucia, it was his eighth helper of the year which are second-most for the Cobbers.
Matthew Hard finished off the scoring, and gave Concordia a 2-goal cushion, at 15:08 of the final frame. Hard was able to knock home the rebound after senior Jack Westlund went hard to the goal around the outside of the defense and had his initial stop saved by the HU netminder.
Westlund and Troy Dahlheimer were credited with the assists on the final goal of the game.
