Jason Voorhees Tour Continues In MIAC Quarterfinal
The Cobbers’ "Jason Voorhees" Tour continued in their MIAC quarterfinal match-up with St. John’s as they scored the first three goals in the opening game of the postseason and came away with a 4-3 win.
ST. CLOUD, Minn. (2/26/25)---Earning only one point in the second-to-last conference series of the year didn't kill off Concordia's season. Neither did losing the final game of the regular season. Nor did changing venues for the first game of the MIAC playoffs. Against all odds, the Cobbers are still alive.
The Cobbers' "Jason Voorhees" Tour continued in their MIAC quarterfinal match-up with St. John's as they scored the first three goals in the opening game of the postseason and came away with a 4-3 win.
The victory earns the Cobber a trip to the MIAC Semifinals for the first time since 2020. No.5-seed Concordia will play at No.1-seed Gustavus on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 5 p.m.
The game on Wednesday marked the third time the two teams had faced one another in less than a week. The Cobbers and Johnnies split the final series of the regular season with each team winning on the road and scoring four goals in the winning effort.
The quarterfinal showdown was originally scheduled to be played at the No.4-seeded Johnnies' regular home Olympic-size rink at the National Hockey Center, where Concordia earned a 4-2 win on Thursday, but was moved to the Municipal Athletic Complex in St. Cloud which more closely resembles the Moorhead Sports Center where St. John's posted a 4-2 win on Saturday.
The Cobbers wasted little time in proving that the smaller ice sheet wouldn't be a problem as they scored the opening goal of the game at the 6:55 mark and added a second at 14:06 to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission.
Junior Joe Harguindeguy opened the Concordia scoring account when he picked up the puck in the neutral zone, raced up the right wing and snapped off a shot from the right faceoff circle that beat the SJU goalie to the top left corner of the net.
Harguindeguy, who scored the game-winning goal in the Cobbers' win at St. John's on Thursday night, picked up his seventh goal of the year. Sophomore defenseman Zach Stoner picked up the assist on the opener after he chipped the puck out of the Concordia zone and up the right sideboards.
Sophomore Blaise Miller doubled the Concordia lead at the back end of the first period. He was able to get behind the Johnnie defense inside the right faceoff circle, cut to his left to get the puck to his forehand and lifted a shot over the Johnnie netminder before he could go post to post.
A hustle play from Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe set up the second goal. He raced back on a backcheck, stole the puck at the CC blueline and backhanded the puck off the center ice boards that went right to Miller.
The two teams were deadlocked at 10-10 in shots on goal for the first 20 minutes of play.
Concordia added its third and fourth goals of the game at the start and finish of the second period.
Tucker Skime completed the streak of three straight goals to start the game when he netted a power-play goal at 3:01.
He was at the left point slot on the power play and took a "D-to-D" pass from MIAC Defensive Player of the Week Tal Halliday and powered a twisted wrister into the net from the top of the left faceoff circle.
The goal was his fifth of the year and he earned a point in his third straight game while Halliday picked up his sixth helper and junior Caden Triggs was credited with the other assist.
St. John's (11-14-1) tightened up the quarterfinal contest after scoring an even-strength goal at 4:12 and one on 5-on-3 power play at 11:25.
The eventual game-winning goal came in the dying seconds of the second period. Henkemeyer-Howe won the draw from the left faceoff circle with only 9.5 seconds left in the period. The puck went to the left point where Halliday collected it and fed Skime on the left sideboards. Skime looked up and saw Henkemeyer-Howe wide open in the right faceoff circle and slotted a perfect backdoor pass which allowed Henkemeyer-Howe to hammer home a 1-timer with 4.2 seconds left on the clock.
The goal was Henkemeyer-Howe's team-leading ninth of the year and gave him 22 points for the season which also leads the team. He now has 37 career goals and 78 career points.
Halliday and Skime both earned their second point of the period on the game winner.
The scoreboard stayed at 4-2 until the final 6 minutes of the third period. St. John's was able to score an even-strength goal at 14:14 which turned the intensity dial in the game all the way up.
The drama went off the charts when the Cobbers were whistled for a boarding penalty with 1:33 left in the game.
St. John's pulled its goalie to set up a 6-on-4 situation and kept the puck in the Concordia zone for the entire 93 seconds.
Cobber goalie Dane Couture proved why he's been the No.1 goalie all year long as he came up with two huge key saves with 45.7 seconds left to go in regulation. Not only did he make the stops, he didn't allow a rebound with traffic all around the net.
Concordia's penalty-kill unit did the rest of the work for the final ticks of the clock as they kept the Johnnies on the perimeter and didn't allow them to work the puck toward the net.
The Cobbers outshot St. John's 30-19 in the final two periods of play to come away with a 40-29 advantage.
Henkemeyer-Howe led CC with seven shots on goal and Skime has six.
Couture stopped 27 of the 29 shots he faced and upped his season win total to 12. His 12 wins are the most by a Cobber goalie since 2012 when Chris Neamonitis went 13-9-0.
Concordia's next sequel to its Friday the 13th series will be set in St. Peter when they face Gustavus on Saturday, Mar. 1 at 5 p.m.
