Cobbers Finally Run Out Of Lives
Concordia gave up two goals in each of the three periods in their MIAC semifinal game at Gustavus and fell 6-2.
ST. PETER, Minn. (3/01/25)---Concordia is out of lives. Like the final sequel to your favorite horror movie, the protagonist always dies at the end.
Such was the case for the Cobbers as the calendar turned over to March and stopped Concordia's February Frenzy. CC gave up two goals in each of the three periods in their MIAC semifinal game at Gustavus and fell 6-2.
The loss ends Concordia's season with a 12-12-3 record.
The No.1-seeded Gusties got off to a perfect start as they were able to score twice in the first five minutes of play. The Cobbers conceded the opener at 3:37 and then a second only 44 seconds later.
Concordia held back Gustavus from adding a third and started to find their game legs midway through the first period.
Senior Isaac Henkemeyer-Howe gave the Cobbers their first burst of momentum when he slammed home a rebound at 12:16. Cole Lehmann took the initial shot from the point and Ben Luedtke was able to come up with the first rebound shot. The Gustie goalie was never able to cover the puck and Henkemeyer-How took several swipes at the puck before he was able to power it past the netminder.
The goal was Henkemeyer-Howe's team-leading 10th of the year and he finishes his career with 38.
Gustavus (15-9-2) broke the game open when they struck for two straight in the first five minutes of the second frame. The regained a 2-goal lead at the 41-second mark and then pushed the lead to 4-1 with a strike at 3:40.
Senior captain Hanson O'Leary was able to bring CC within two goals with a power play goal at 4:55.
Sophomore Tucker Skime set up the second goal for Concordia. He jumped high in the air to knock down a clearing attempt at the left point and fired a shot on goal after he gained control of the puck. O'Leary was all alone in the right faceoff circle and 1-timed home the rebound for his fifth goal of the year.
The game would stay at 4-2 until the final 1:40 of the third period when the Gusties notched a pair of empty-net goals after Concordia pulled netminder Dane Couture with 1:59 left in the game.
The two teams put up similar statistical numbers. The Cobbers held a 34-30 edge in shots on goal and both team scored a goal on the power play. O'Leary led CC with five shots on frame.
Couture made 24 saves for the Cobbers.
