Steeplechase Crew Leads Cobbers In Winona

WINONA, Minn. (4/15/23)---The steeplechase trio of Tanner Olson, Gavin Groshelle and Nick Trzynka led the Concordia crew at the SMU Cardinal Invitational in Winona.

The three Cobbers posted a 1-2-3 finish in the steeplechase and were a part of a group of seven Top 3 finishers for Concordia.

Olson recorded the only event win for the Cobbers in Winona. He raced to a sub-10-minute time of 9:58.42 in the steeplechase which is No.6 on the MIAC list this season. Groshelle cracked the Top 20 in the conference with a mark of 10:29.99 and Trzynka is in the Top 25 with his time of 10:47.36.      

A pair of first-year athletes came through with runner-up finishes in the hurdle races among the bluffs. Logan Clark was second in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.89, while Caleb Karg was the runner-up in the 400-meter hurdles at 59.56. Clark's time is the seventh fastest in the MIAC this year, while Karg's mark is No.9 in the conference.

Dawson Schaffer and Solomon Johnson completed the Concordia Top 3 septet. Schaffer was third in the 100-meter dash after crossing the line in 11.25 and Johnson was third in the 800 meters at 1:59.38. Schaffer moved into the Top 10 in the MIAC with his finishing time, while Johnson is just inside the Top 20.

Nolan Morical posted a pair of Top 6 spring finishes. He was fifth in the 200 meters at 22.54 and sixth in the 100 meters with a mark of 11.45.

Ricky Ramirez and Nick Hermes had the top finishes among the Cobber field group. Ramirez was fifth in the fifth in the discus with a mark of 128-10 and Hermes was fifth in the long jump at 20-00.25. The distance for Hermes is a season-best mark and puts him inside the qualifying line for the MIAC Championship Meet.             

Ramirez owns the second-farthest discus throw in the MIAC this year. He put up a mark of 141-00 last weekend in South Dakota.
