Cobbers Cruise Past Cougars in Season Opener
Concordia rolled to an 85-56 victory over Minnesota Morris on Tuesday night inside Memorial Auditorium, using a dominant third quarter to pull away and secure its first win of the season.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/12/25) – Concordia set the tone early in its home opener, jumping out to a 9–4 lead in the first quarter following a Maya Metcalf layup. The Cobbers continued to build momentum with an 8–0 run midway through the frame, fueled by baskets from Kaia Gack, Molly Musland, and Tatum Findley. Kaitlyn Rohloff came off the bench and drilled a 3-pointer to extend the lead to 20–11, and Concordia closed the quarter up 22–11 — a lead it would never relinquish.
Another Musland three pushed the Cobber advantage to 14 early in the second quarter. Minnesota Morris trimmed the deficit to nine late in the period, but a Findley triple and free throws from Clara-Mae Hager and Metcalf helped Concordia head into halftime with a 43–28 lead.
The Cobbers broke the game wide open in the third quarter, holding the Cougars to just 2-of-14 shooting during a decisive 25–6 run. A Taylor Safranski steal led to a Gack transition layup assisted by Rohloff, giving Concordia a commanding 68–34 lead heading into the final stretch.
The Cobbers continued to roll in the fourth quarter with contributions across the roster. After Minnesota Morris opened the frame with a jumper from Maddy Grove, Gack answered immediately with a layup to maintain the 34-point cushion. Maci Wheeldon then caught fire, scoring eight straight points to extend the Cobber lead to 78–45. A late Mercedes Lawrence layup made it 85–53 before a final Cougar three closed the scoring at 85–56.
Concordia shot 42.1% (32-of-72) from the floor and 35.3% (6-of-17) from beyond the arc. Wheeldon led the way offensively with 16 points, while Gack added 14. Musland went 2-of-3 from deep and finished with 10 points. Defensively, Musland led the team with three steals, while Taya Jeffrey added two.
The Cobbers will look to build on the momentum when they host UW–River Falls on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in Memorial Auditorium.
