Cobber Comeback Drops Gusties
Concordia trailed by as many as 14 points but came up with a 7-0 run in the final 83 seconds to overtake Gustavus and post a 70-66 win.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/14/26)---Concordia came up with a 7-0 run in the final 1:23 to complete a 14-point second-half comeback and earned a huge win over defending MIAC champion Gustavus.
The Cobbers trailed by as many as 15 points in the first before sophomore Kaia Gack's jumper from the elbow with :05-seconds remaining completed the fourth-quarter comeback and gave Concordia the 70-66 win.
The win is the 12th of the season for Concordia and ups their overall record to 12-2. CC remains tied atop the MIAC standings with a 6-1 mark. Gustavus falls to 8-6 in all games and 4-3 against conference opponents.
Concordia's improbable comeback started midway through the third quarter after the Cobbers shot 18.2 (2-for-11) from 3-point range, 28.6% (8-for-28) from the floor and trailed Gustaus 36-23 at the break.
The Cobber comeback trail began when CC trailed by 14 points with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Concordia would finish the period by outscoring the Gusties 14-7 and went into the final quarter down by seven at 53-46.
Concordia scored the first four points but then watched as Gustavus rallied to grab a 9-point advantage at 60-51 with 6:01 left in regulation.
It was all maroon and gold from that point forward.
The biggest run of the game came after CC trailed by nine. They scored the next six points to drop the margin to a manageable three points at 60-57.
The Gusties answered with a made 3-pointer at the 2:13 mark which turned out to be their final points in the game.
The Cobbers answered the answer with three straight free throws from Maya Metcalf and a crowd-standing 3-pointer from Molly Musland that tied the game at 63-63 with 1:23 left.
The CC defense responded with pressure that forced a 3-point miss and then Gack stepped up to drain the elbow jumper to win the game with five ticks left on the clock.
A Gustie turnover on the next possession sealed the deal and first-year guard Kaitlyn Rohloff topped the win with a pair of made free throws.
Metcalf finished with a team-high 19 points to go with eight rebounds and four assists.
Gack was a perfect 6-for-6 from the floor and put up 15 points on the score line.
Taylor Safranski upped her MIAC-leading assist total. She dropped eight dimes on the Gusties and now has 70 for the season. Safranski also added six rebounds.
Concordia will stay at home when they host Augsburg on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 1 p.m.
