With the loss, the Cobbers drop to 3-12-0 overall on the year and 1-7 in conference play. St. Scholastica improved to an identical 3-12-0 overall record and is now 2-6 in conference play.
Like the game on Friday, the first period was scoreless, with both teams having quality scoring chances.
The Cobbers were mere inches away from breaking the scoreless tie with 12:40 left in the second period after a pass from behind the net found a junior Morgan Sauvageau all alone at the left faceoff dot, but her shot ricocheted off the pipe and out of play.
Not two minutes later, a Saints forward threw a puck from the right corner that hit a Cobber defenseman and went in for the first goal of the game, and only goal of the period, as the Cobbers entered the third period trailing by one.
The third period was all Concordia, as they drew two penalties in the first five minutes and held the Saints shotless for the first eight minutes. Cobbers had their last chance of the game when a Saints tripping penalty put Concordia on the power play with 2:05 left in the third period.
The Cobbers pulled their goalie to gain the 6-on-4 advantage and put five shots on goal in the final 2:05 of the game, but a Saints empty-net goal with 36 seconds left dashed any hope of tying the game.
Both teams' penalty kills were perfect, as the Cobbers killed off both penalties they took and the Saints killed all three of theirs.
The Cobbers outshot the Saints 44-23, with 21 shots in the third period alone. Memphis Mertens led the Cobbers in shots with nine, while Sauvageau and first-year defender Allie Emineth each put seven shots on goal. In total, the Cobbers had five individuals with five or more shots and eight with at least two shots.
Goaltender Ashlea Arvidson stopped 21 of the 22 shots sent her way.
Concordia will be away from home as they will start a series against St. Olaf on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m.
