Zierden Leads Cobbers On Day 1 At NCAA Regional
Senior Gabe Zierden led Concordia on the opening day of the Upper Midwest Regional Meet held at Concordia University in Mequon, Wis. Zierden is one of seven Cobber wrestlers still alive for a shot at the national meet.
MEQUON, Wis. (2/24/23)---Senior Gabe Zierden led Concordia on the opening day of the Upper Midwest Regional Meet held at Concordia University in Mequon, Wis.
Zierden posted two pins in his first two matches at 197, and was the only Cobber to advance to the semifinals in his weight class.
Zierden is one of seven Cobber wrestlers still alive for a shot at the national meet. Zierden needs only one more win to earn a spot at the NCAA National Meet, while Ty Bisek, Cade Lundeen, Jacob Prunty, Tyler Bents, Elijah Hunt and Alex Rapelje will all need to win three matches on Saturday to get to nationals.
Zierden started his day by posting a pin at the 1:36 mark against Colin O'Neill of Elmhurst (Ill.). His second match was a bit tougher as he needed to go to the third period before getting his opponent's shoulders on the mat. Zierden came through with a pin at 5:48 against Ben Kawczynski of UW-La Crosse.
Zierden will now face Beau Yineman of UW-Oshkosh in the semifinals. Yineman is ranked second in Division III and beat Zierden in the quarterfinals at last year's regional meet.
Concordia started the day on a tear as eight of the nine competing wrestlers won their opening-round match to get to the quarterfinals. The quarterfinal round wasn't so nice to CC as they went 1-7 with only Zierden advancing to the semifinals.
No.5-ranked Ty Bisek cruised to a win in his opening match at 133. He posted a fall at 1:26 against Justin Holmes of Elmhurst to get to the Round of 8. Bisek gave up a third-period takedown and lost to Griffin Seyfried 4-3.
No.15-ranked Lundeen, Hunt, and Nathaniel Kisgen all won by fall in their opening matches, but then all three lost in the quarterfinals. Lundeen would come back to win his opener in the consolation wrestlebacks, but Hunt and Kisgen both lost in that round and are out of the tournament.
