In a storyline only a Hollywood scriptwriter could create, senior Gabe Zierden won the Upper Midwest Regional championship at 197 and was one of seven place winners for the Cobbers.
It was the lucky number seven for the Cobbers on Friday at the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional Meet. Concordia had seven wrestlers advance to Saturday after a rollercoaster Day 1.
It's go time for the No.23-ranked Cobbers. They've waited all season to get to this point. The wait is over and the NCAA Upper Midwest Regional is upon Concordia when they travel to Stevens Point, Wis. on Mar. 1-2
Concordia led No.1-ranked Augsburg after two matches, but then ran into eight straight Top 6-ranked wrestlers and lost 45-6. Ty Bisek picked up his 23rd win of the year when he posted a pin in the second period of his match at 133.
Concordia did its best Noah Lyles impersonation as they sprinted out of the blocks, won the first four matches against MSU Moorhead and cruised to a 27-17 win at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The Cobbers won six of the first seven dual bouts on the way to posting their 12th victory over the Dragons in the last 13 dual meets.
It wasn’t the outcome they wanted, but the Cobbers returned from the NWCA National Duals with a pair of wins and several quality individual performances. Concordia dropped its first two duals of the tournament, but responded by posting wins over Olivet (Mich.) and Aurora (Ill.).
