Fast Start Leads To Another Win Over The Dragons
Concordia did its best Noah Lyles impersonation as they sprinted out of the blocks, won the first four matches against MSU Moorhead and cruised to a 27-17 win at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The Cobbers won six of the first seven dual bouts on the way to posting their 12th victory over the Dragons in the last 13 dual meets.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (2/09/14)---Concordia did its best Noah Lyles (Google it) impersonation as they sprinted out of the blocks, won the first four matches against MSU Moorhead and cruised to a 27-17 win at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse.
The Cobbers won six of the first seven dual bouts on the way to posting their 12th victory over the Dragons in the last 13 dual meets.
The victory is the fourth straight for Concordia in dual meets. CC is now 6-3 on the season.
The Cobbers elected to have the dual start at a different weight class, won the coin toss and chose to start meet at the 165-lb weight class. Head Coach Quincy Osborn's tactical decision paid off in a huge way as Concordia won the first four matches to spring to a 17-0 lead. CC would put the match out of reach by claiming two of the next three bouts and extending its lead to 27-4.
Elijah Hunt started the fire by posting an 11-4 decision in the opening match at 165. The victory was Hunt's career-best 17th of the season and he is now 17-7 on the year.
Zach Pribyl gave the Cobbers' their first bonus-point win of the night. He survived an early takedown in the first period at 174 and then came away with a pin at the 1:14 mark of the second period. For Pribyl, it was his second pin of the season and he ups his record to 9-7.
Nathaniel Kisgen made it three straight to start the night when he earned a 7-3 decision at 174. He did all his work in the first period when he posted a takedown and a 3-point near fall. Kisgen gave up a takedown in the third period but used his superior riding time to earn the 4-point win.
Senior Gabe Zierden, who is ranked 12th in the latest NWCA national rankings, took one step closer to becoming the 10th athlete in program history to reach the 100-win milestone. Zierden was never in trouble in his match at 197. He had a takedown and a 4-point near fall in the opening frame, and a quartet of takedowns in the second period to finish off the 19-2 tech fall at the 5:08 mark of the bout.
Zierden has a team-best 31 wins on the season. He is 31-2 for the year and has 98 career wins.
The Cobbers recorded a pair of bonus-point wins at 125 and 133. Kie Anderson scored the early takedown at 125 and then put his opponent's shoulders on the mat at 1:10. Anderson is now 6-2 on the year since returning to the lineup in January.
No.5-ranked Ty Bisek had his match go the distance at 133. Bisek never trailed in his bout as he had a takedown in the first and second periods and then finished with a flurry of six points in the final period to earn the 12-1 major decision.
Bisek is now 22-2 on the year with 16 bonus-point victories.
UP NEXT: Concordia will host No.1-ranked Augsburg in the final dual of the season. The Cobbers and Auggies will square off on Saturday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m.
