Flurry Of Goals Cost Cobbers

ST. PETER, Minn. (9/16/17)--- Concordia came up on the short end of a three-goal, 14-minute flurry and lost 2-1 at Gustavus in the second conference game of the year.

The Cobbers were unable to come up with a game-tying goal in the final 30 minutes of play and lost for the second straight game. CC is now 2-3-1 in all games and 0-2-0 in the MIAC. The Gusties remain unbeaten in their last five games and are now 4-1-1 overall and 2-0-0 in the MIAC.

The teams played through a scoreless first half but then the offensive sparks began to fly in the first minute of the second half.

Karsen Granning staked Concordia to a 1-0 lead just 48-seconds into the final half. She scored her first goal of the season, and second of her career at the 45:38 mark. Kalli Baarstad and Kirsten Bokinskie were credited with the assists.

The lead would be short-lived as Gustavus countered with the game-tying goal less than 30 seconds later. The Gusties took the restart , gained control of the Cobber defensive third of the field and then lofted a shot from the top of the penalty area that just slipped under the crossbar.

Gustavus would then win the game at the 59:43 mark when a through ball beat the Cobber defense and a Gustie attacker found the back of the net.

Concordia had the two best chances to score in the final 30 minutes of play. CC was stopped on a breakaway attempt with just under 19-minutes to play and then a header by Sarah Liimatta off of a corner kick was turned aside by the GAC goalie at the 81:08 mark.

Concordia was outshot 10-5 in shots on goal in the game. Granning led CC with a pair of shots on frame.

Maddy Reed made eight saves in goal for the Cobbers.              
    
NEXT UP: Concordia will hope to get back on the winning track when they host Wis.-Eau Claire on Sunday, Sept. 17 at 2:30 p.m. The Blugolds are 0-4-1 on the season but have lost all four goals by one goal.
