Cobbers Go 4-Wheeling To Claim Dramatic Win Over Eagles
Concordia went 4-wheeling in their non-conference match with Northwestern. The Cobbers used the unconventional off-road path to victory as they lost all three doubles matches to start the day, but then rallied to claim five of the six singles matches to prevail by a 5-4 score line.
FARGO, N.D. (2/10/24)---Concordia went 4-wheeling in their non-conference match with Northwestern. The Cobbers went off-road to take the path less traveled path and edged the Eagles 5-4.
Concordia lost all three doubles matches to start the day, but then rallied to claim five of the six singles matches to prevail by a 5-4 score line.
The victory is the second in three matches to begin the spring season for the Cobbers. CC is now 3-4 in all matches in 2023-24.
Not only was the rally from 3-0 down storyline unconventional, but to add more drama, the Cobbers also claimed three wins in singles play in the super-set tie-breaker.
Raquel Egge and Mary Skorich started the Concordia comeback by posting straight-set victories at the top of the singles order. Egge won 6-3, -4 at No.1 singles, and Skorich produced a 6-4, 7-5 win at No.2 singles.
The drama, and match, turned in the No.3, No.4 and No.5 singles spots. All three went to the super-set and in two of the three, the Cobbers came back from a 1-0 deficit to claim the match.
Erin Borchard dropped her first set 6-3 at No.4 singles, but then won 6-3 in the second and earned key breaks to pull out the 10-6 victory in the tie-breaker.
Lizzie Allan fell 6-1 in the opener before finding her game and rallying to grab a 6-3 win in the second set. She carried that momentum over to the super-set tie-breaker and pulled away for a 10-5 win.
Allan leads the team in singles wins this year. She has claimed victory in two of her three singles bouts this spring and has four victories this season.
The team match came down to the No.3 singles match where senior Anna Hacker showed her experience in claiming the win. With all the players and fans gathered around the court in the last match of the day, Hacker went out to a 1-0 lead by posting a 7-6 (3) tie-breaker win in the first set.
Hacker couldn't keep up the pace and lost 6-1 in the second set. She then regrouped, found her ground-stroke game and roared to a 10-6 win in the super-set.
Hacker is 2-1 in the spring season and has 15 wins in her career as a Cobber.
UP NEXT: Concordia will have little time to celebrate their dramatic win as they will travel to Grand Forks to face Minn.-Crookston on Sunday, Feb. 11 at 9:45 p.m.
