Improvement Shown In Opening Dual-Meet Weekend
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (9/28/25)---Concordia opened its 2025-26 dual meet schedule by playing hosting a pair of non-conference opponents on Saturday and then kicked off MIAC play at regionally-ranked Carleton on Sunday.
The scores might not have been in the Cobbers' favor, but the new-look CC squad showed big signs of improvement by taking more games from their DII opponents than they have done in recent history.
Concordia opened the weekend by falling 6-1 to cross-town rival MSU Moorhead. They turned around and went toe-to-toe with the University of Mary later in the afternoon in a match that was decided by a single point.
The Cobbers' 4-3 loss to the DII Marauders marked the first time in three years that CC has won recorded more than one team point against Mary. Last year, Concordia lost 7-0.
The Cobbers won all three doubles bouts against the Univ. of Mary to earn the single team point for doubles play. Firrst-year athlete Tanis Lee and senior Erin Borchard won 6-1 at No.1 doubles and the junior tandem of Annalise Skrade and Ava Lowman duplicated that score line with a 6-1 victory at No.3 doubles. The newcomer duo of Alyssa Sommerfeld and Shireen Durrani picked up their first collegiate doubles win by holding off their opponents 7-5 at No.2 doubles.
Durrani also picked up one of the two singles wins for CC after her opponent had to retire due to illness at No.3 singles.
The other singles win came in the No.2 match-up where Sommerfeld posted a straight-set 7-6 (3), 6-4 win which gave her the double win for the team match.
The Cobbers' match against MSU Moorhead featured three singles bouts that went to the super-set tie-breaker with CC winning one of the three. Lowman claimed the only team point for Concordia when she dropped the opening set at No.6 singles but then roared back to win the second set 6-3 and finished off the match with a 10-5 score in the super-set.
Concordia finished the weekend by falling 7-0 at Carleton on Sunday. Even in the scoreless team output for the Cobbers, there were significant signs of improvement. In 2024, CC lost 9-0 and only won 10 total games which included only five in the singles bouts. On Sunday, Concordia came away with 17 game wins .
The closest match of the day came at No.1 doubles where Lee and Borchard were edged 6-4.
Concordia will finish off its fall season when they host St. Olaf on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 12 p.m.
