A Second MIAC Championship In Northfield
Concordia pulled off the track & field season double as they cruised to the team title at the MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet at St. Olaf less than three months after earning the crown at the conference indoor meet at Carleton.
NORTHFIELD, Minn. (5/09/26)---What's better than one MIAC Championship in Northfield in a span of three months? How about two MIAC Championships!
Concordia pulled off the track & field season double as they cruised to the team title at the MIAC Outdoor Championship Meet at St. Olaf less than three months after earning the crown at the conference indoor meet at Carleton.
You'll have to excuse head coach Marv Roeske if he decides to petition the MIAC to hold all the conference meets in Moorhead South….aka Northfield,
The outdoor championship is the third in program history for the Cobbers and the first since 2004 – which, ironically, also came at St. Olaf. It is also only the second time in school history that they have captured both the indoor and outdoor championships in the same season. Concordia also turned the double in 1999.
Like the indoor championship they won in February, Concordia used the strength of their team depth to capture the crown. The Cobbers didn't post an event win on Saturday but had six individual third-place finishers to go with a second and third place result in the relays to score 67 team points on Day 2 of the meet.
Concordia finished the championship meet with 172 total points which was 21 points clear of runner-up Bethel.
The list of third-place finishers was a season-long who's who for the Cobbers – Emily Rengo, Lauren Pearson, Kyla Nygaard, Josie Brown, Kelyn Henry-Perlich and Chloe Mueffelmann all posted bronze medal finishes which earned CC 36 team points. Add in the 14 points garnered by the two relay teams and you have 50 of the 67 points that were scored on Saturday.
One of the highlights of the third-place crew was Henry-Perlich's school-record time in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. She raced to a time of 11:13.68 which bettered the old mark of 11:19.40 set by Jen St. John in 2005.
Rengo was the only member of the Cobbers' track squad to score team points in two events on Saturday. She placed third in the 100 meters with a time of 12.12 and clocked a season-best time of 25.43 in the 200 and finished in fourth place.
Pearson capped off her outstanding first MIAC outdoor meet by coming in third in the 100-meter hurdles with a PR time of 15.46.
Nygaard came up with her fastest time of the season in the 800 meters to grab her third-place finish. She crossed the line in 2:12.59 and sits less than two seconds off of a national qualifying time.
Brown may have earned her way to nationals with her performance in the 400-meter hurdles. She came through with a PR time of 1:01.84 which has her in the No.17 spot in Division III.
Mueffelmann was the lone Top 3 finisher in the day's four field events. She posted her third-place finish in the shot put with a personal best mark of 43-09.75. Her distance is 7 inches away from being in the Top 22 of the country and getting to nationals.
Genevieve Dabout also scored points in the shot put. A day after finishing second in the discus, she posted a distance of 39-05.75 and placed eighth.
The Cobber 4x400-meter relay quartet of Rengo, Brown, Emma Warner and Nygaard put the cherry on top of the MIAC Championship ice cream cake by clocking a 3:50.55 which was a season-best mark, put them in the runner-up spot and gave CC its final eight points of the meet.
Rengo was also joined by Lydia Fynboh, Piper Osborne and Andie Sandman in the 4x100 relay and that crew came home in third place with a season-best time of 48.22.
Concordia will now hit the last chance circuit to try and qualify as many athletes for the national meet. CC will head to Wis.-La Crosse to begin the next season on Thursday, May 14.
