Cobbers Rally Strong in Tight Loss at Augsburg
The Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers fought hard in a competitive matchup against Augsburg, ultimately falling in a close 3-set battle, 25–20, 25–17, 26–24. Despite the loss, the Cobbers showcased grit and determination, keeping every set tightly contested and displaying strong offensive and defensive efforts throughout the match.
MINNEAPOLIS MINN, (10/17/25) – Augsburg opened the match with a strong first set, ultimately taking it 25–20, but Concordia-Moorhead stayed competitive throughout. The Cobbers were led by Betsy Schiltz, Addy Klemin, Mallory Leitner, and Annie Horan, who contributed key kills to keep the score close in the early stages.
Concordia-Moorhead remained within striking distance throughout the set, trading points nearly the entire frame, with nine ties occurring in Set 1. However, Augsburg began to pull away late in the set. The 18–18 mark was the last tie, after which Auggie kills shifted momentum decisively to their side. Augsburg went on a 4–0 run, which was briefly halted by a Klemin kill. Following that, the Auggies scored the next two points, ending the set in commanding fashion. The late 7–2 run allowed Augsburg to close the set 25–20.
Augsburg carried the momentum from the first set into the second, ultimately taking it 25–17. The Cobbers stayed competitive early, exchanging points and keeping the set close in the opening stages. Concordia-Moorhead showed flashes of strong play, with several kills and service aces helping them stay within striking distance. Despite their efforts, the Cobbers were unable to overcome Augsburg's consistent offense. The Auggies gradually pulled away, building a lead late in the frame and closing out the set to take a 2–0 match advantage.
The Cobbers did not back down in Set 3. It was a back-and-forth thriller, with Augsburg narrowly taking the frame 26–24 to complete the sweep. Concordia opened the set strong, exchanging points with Augsburg and trading leads multiple times. The Cobbers briefly held a 10–9 lead following a kill from Emma Nagorski, and later tied the score at 16–16 on a service ace from Kali Malvey.
The teams continued to battle point-for-point, with neither side giving more than a two-point advantage. Late in the set, the tension heightened as multiple ties occurred in the 20s. Kills from Annie Horan and Mallory Leitner helped tie the score at 21, and two consecutive kills from Kali Malvey gave the Cobbers a late 24–23 advantage. However, Augsburg capitalized on a timely error to score the next two points, ultimately taking the set 26–24.
The Cobbers were led offensively by Horan and Leitner, each recording 7 kills. Leitner posted a team-high hitting percentage of .278, with Klemin close behind at .200. In the back row, Kelsi Martini led with 12 digs, while Betsy Schilts orchestrated the offense with 22 assists.
The Cobbers return to action next Saturday when they travel to Carleton for a 5:00 game.
