#23 Gustavus Sweeps Cobbers in Tight 3-Set Match
The Cobbers battled through three tightly contested sets against Gustavus but ultimately fell 3–0 (25–22, 26–24, 25–19) on Saturday night. Despite the sweep, Concordia saw strong performances from Lauren Pearson and Addy Klemin, who each recorded seven kills, while Kelsi Martini and Annie Horan anchored the defense with double-digit digs.
MOORHEAD,MINN (10/25/25) – The Cobbers jumped out to an early 5–3 lead in the opening set, fueled by a pair of kills from Annie Horan and an ace from Holland Fitterer. The teams traded points early, with No.23-ranked Gustavus, tying the set at 7, 8, 9, and 10 before stringing together a three-point run to pull ahead. A kill from Horan halted the run and sparked a 4–0 Cobber surge that gave Concordia a 14–13 advantage. Addy Klemin added a kill, and a Gustavus error put the Cobbers back in front 18–17 late in the frame. The Gusties answered with a 4–0 run to regain control. Despite a few timely Gustavus errors that brought Concordia within one, the Gusties held on for a 25–22 set-one victory.
Set two was a thriller. Gustavus came out fast, building an early 6–2 lead and extending it to 10–4 following an ace. A kill from Lauren Pearson helped the Cobbers close the gap, and a Klemin kill paired with a double block from Horan and Ella Leitner brought the score to 12–11. Klemin then sparked a 3–0 Cobber run to give Concordia a one-point lead midway through the set. The Gusties countered with a 4–0 stretch of their own to move ahead by three, but the Cobbers battled back once again, taking an 18–17 lead behind kills from Horan and Cayla Sailer. Pearson's late kill gave the Cobbers a 23–20 advantage, but Gustavus rallied behind strong serving and Cobber errors to steal the set 26–24.
The Gusties carried their momentum into set three, jumping out to a 7–2 lead. A Pearson kill and a Schiltz ace trimmed the Cobber deficit to 10–7. Later in the set, kills from Kaili Malvey and Pearson, along with a Gustavus miscue, brought Concordia within one at 15–14. The Cobbers continued to fight, with Pearson again cutting the lead to one late, but Gustavus closed on a 4–0 run to seal the match with a 25–19 win.
Offensively, the Cobbers were led by Klemin and Pearson, who each tallied seven kills. Kelsi Martini paced the defense with 16 digs, while Horan added 15. Betsy Schiltz finished with 18 assists.
The Cobbers return to action on Friday, Oct. 31, when they travel to Hamline for a 7 p.m. match.
