BLAINE, Minn. (2/14/25)---Isaac Henkemeyer's 2-goal game helped Concordia rally from a 2-0 first-period deficit and come away with a 2-2 overtime tie in the series opener at Bethel.
The Cobbers gain a single point in the conference standings after coming up short in the 3-shot shootout.
The tie is the second in the last three games between the two teams and Concordia is now 8-2-3 against the Royals in the last 13 games in the series.
The tie is the second in the last three games between the two teams and Concordia is now 8-2-3 against the Royals in the last 13 games in the series.
The point in the MIAC standings is huge for the Cobbers as it keeps them in the Top 5 in the conference in the race for the 5-team MIAC playoffs. Concordia remains unbeaten in its last seven games and is now 6-4-3 in league play and 10-9-3 overall. CC has 20 points in the MIAC standings which is good for a tie for fifth place with St. John's.
Bethel is now 7-4-2 in the MIAC and 11-8-3 in all games. The Royals are tied for second place in the league standings.
It took the Cobbers until the final minute of the second period to finally get on the board. Bethel opened the scoring with a pair of strikes in the first frame. They struck early with a goal at 2:03 and doubled their lead at the 8:59 mark.
Henkemeyer-Howe gave the Cobbers the momentum heading into the third period when he netted the first of his two goals on the night at 19:29 of the second period. He finished off a 2-on-1 attack with some nifty stick work in front of goal. Hunter Olson fed Henkemeyer-Howe and Henkemeyer-Howe was able to get the puck out of his skates and slide the puck into the right side of the goal. Ben Luedtke also got credit for an assist on the goal.
The game had the appearance of a 2-1 Bethel win late in the third but then Henkemeyer-Howe tied the contest with his team-leading eighth goal of the season. Once again it was Olson who set the table for Henkemeyer-Howe. Olson took a pass from Hunter Bjorge and fired a shot from the right faceoff dot. The BU goalie stopped the offering from Olson but the rebound went directly to Henkemeyer-Howe on the left side of the crease and he fired the 1-timer into the back of the net.
Olson's two assists on the night give him 10 for the season, while Henkemeyer-Howe collected his team-leading 19th point of the season. Olson has eight assists in league play which is tied for eighth in the MIAC.
Bethel outshot the Cobbers 4-1 in the final 2 minutes of regulation and 3-2 in the 5-minute OT period but CC goalie Dane Couture wasn't going to allow a game winner and the teams skated to the 2-2 draw.
Concordia didn't score on any of its three shoutout attempts to gain the extra point in the standings. The Royals picked up the second point by scoring on their third attempt.
Couture finished with 29 saves in the 65 minutes of play.
The Cobbers will look to gain more points when they take on the Royals in the series finale on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 5 p.m.
