Cobbers Can't Catch Royals In Series Finale
There would be no comeback to force overtime in the Cobbers’ second game of their series at Bethel. Concordia conceded four goals in the second period on Saturday and lost 6-2 to the Royals.
BLAINE, Minn. (2/15/25)---There would be no comeback to force overtime in the Cobbers' second game of their series at Bethel. Concordia conceded four goals in the second period on Saturday and lost 6-2 to the Royals.
The loss drops Concordia into a tie for sixth place in the race for the 5-team MIAC tournament. CC is 6-5-3 in the conference and has 20 points in the league standings. They are 10-10-3 overall. The Cobbers are three points behind the 3-way tie for third place which features St. John's – Concordia's opponent in the final series of the regular season.
The game appeared to be headed in the same direction as Friday night where Bethel got off to an early lead and then Concordia reeled them in before skating to a 2-2 overtime tie.
On Saturday, the Royals scored at 11:13 of the first period. But an Adam Brown goal only 21 seconds later knotted the game at 1-1. Brown's shot from the top of the right faceoff circle eluded the BU goalie at the 11:34 mark. The goal was Brown's third of the season.
Bethel (12-8-3, 8-4-2 MIAC) broke the deadlock just before the first intermission and the game looked like it would stay within a goal for the final two periods.
That scenario changed when the Royals scored a third goal at 6:45 and then added three more tallies in a span of less than 5 minutes starting at the 11:45 mark.
Concordia junior defenseman Tal Halliday netted the only goal of the third period when he raced the length of the ice on a 2-on-1 break and fired a shot from the left faceoff dot that knocked the water bottle off the top of the net.
The unassisted goal at 10:05 was Halliday's fourth of the year.
The Cobbers and Royals both had 11 shots in the final period but CC was never able to make a run to get to within striking distance.
Bethel held a 30-24 edge in shots on goal for the game. Tucker Skime led CC with five shots on goal and Caden Triggs added four.
Dane Couture played the first 20 minutes and made 13 saves. Philippe De Champlain played the final two periods and stopped 11 shots.
Concordia will square off with St. John's in a home-and-home series next weekend. The Cobbers will open the playoff-deciding series on Thursday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. at the National Hockey Center in St. Cloud.
