Second-Half Streaks Stop Cobbers
Point streaks at the start of the third and fourth quarters sent Concordia to its first MIAC loss of the season. The Cobbers surrendered a 6-0 run at the start of the second half and then an 8-0 stretch at the beginning of the final period of play which led to a 63-51 loss at St. Mary’s.
WINONA, Minn. (1/10/26)---Point streaks at the start of the third and fourth quarters sent No.25-ranked Concordia to its first MIAC loss of the season.
The Cobbers surrendered a 6-0 run at the start of the second half and then an 8-0 stretch at the beginning of the final period of play which led to a 63-51 loss at St. Mary's.
Concordia (11-2, 5-1 MIAC) was outscored 41-30 in the second half after the game went to the halftime break with SMU holding a 22-21 lead.
The Cobbers had four fewer field goals and two fewer 3-pointers in the second half than the Cardinals. Concordia shot 20.0% (1-for-5) from outside the arc in the final 20 minutes of play while St. Mary's shot 51.5% (17-for-33) from floor and held a 30-18 advantage in points in the pain in the second half of play.
Concordia finished the game by shooting 40.0% (22-for-55) from the floor and 20.0% (3-for-15) from distance. CC was 4-for-9 (44.4%) from the free throw line. The four made free throws and 44.4% shooting mark from the foul line are both season lows.
St. Mary's (11-3, 5-1 MIAC) connected on 42.6% (26-for-61) of their attempts from the floor and 31.3% (5-for-16) of their chances from 3-point range. SMU was 6-for-10 from the free throw line.
The game featured only 10 made free throws,19 total free throw attempts and 26 total fouls.
The Cobbers held a 37-35 edge in rebounds but were outpointed in the paint by a 40-28 margin.
Maya Metcalf was the only Concordia player with more than seven points in the game. She led the Cobbers with 12 points and seven rebounds and scored eight of her 12 points in the second half. Metcalf also added three more blocks to her season rejection total. She now has 19 for the season.
Senior Taylor Safranski recorded seven points and six rebounds.
Concordia will look to get back on the winning track when they host Gustavus on Wednesday, Jan. 14 at 5:45 p.m.
