Balanced Offensive Attack Overpowers Augsburg
A balanced offensive attack and a dominant presence on the boards propelled the Concordia women’s basketball team to an 89–55 win over Augsburg, improving to 13–2 overall and 7–1 in MIAC play, as Maya Metcalf powered the Cobbers with 19 points and 14 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/17/26) – A balanced offensive attack and a dominant presence on the boards propelled the Concordia-Moorhead women's basketball team to an 89–55 win over Augsburg, improving to 13–2 overall and 7–1 in MIAC play, as Maya Metcalf powered the Cobbers with 19 points and 14 rebounds to record her fourth double-double of the season.
Concordia set the tone early, as Genevieve Gruba opened the scoring with a layup. Back-to-back three-pointers from Molly Musland and Taylor Safranski pushed the Cobbers ahead 10–5, and Concordia continued to build momentum. A Kaia Gack layup with 2:21 remaining in the first quarter extended the lead to 20–10. Augsburg responded with a pair of layups late, but the Cobbers carried a 20–14 advantage into the second quarter.
Taya Jeffrey jump-started the second period with a three-pointer followed by a layup to give Concordia an 11-point cushion. Augsburg answered briefly, but Metcalf converted an and-one layup to keep the Cobbers in control. Each Augsburg basket was quickly matched, including a Musland three that answered an Augsburg triple at the 6:06 mark.
Peyton Breidenbach made an immediate impact off the bench, knocking down a three-pointer one minute after entering the game to make it 40–28. A late Kaitlyn Rohloff three helped Concordia take a 45–32 lead into halftime.
The Cobbers wasted no time in the third quarter, opening with consecutive layups from Metcalf and Jeffrey to stretch the lead to 51–32. After Augsburg connected from beyond the arc, Metcalf answered with a three of her own. Concordia continued to pull away with scoring from Safranski, Jeffrey, Gack and Madison Snesrud, building a 64–40 advantage. Late three-pointers from Tatum Findley and Breidenbach pushed the lead to 70–44 heading into the fourth quarter.
Concordia remained dominant in the final period, outscoring Augsburg 19–11. Early threes from Rohloff and Leah Lenz extended the lead, and Snesrud added points at the free-throw line. Late baskets from Cabryn Fritel, Rohloff and Paige Evans sealed the 89–55 win. Rohloff's layup marked the Cobbers' largest lead of the night at 34 points.
As a team, the Cobbers shot 35 percent (21-for-60) from the field and held a 50–32 rebounding advantage. Metcalf led the way with a 19-point, 14-rebound double-double, while Jeffrey and Kaitlyn Rohloff each added 11 points. Safranski dished out a team-high five assists, and Concordia showcased its depth with 14 different players scoring in the contest.
Concordia returns to action on Wednesday, January 21, when it travels to Macalester for a 5:30 p.m. tipoff.
