Improvement Shown In Game 2
Less than 24 hours after falling by six goals in the season opener, the Cobbers went wire-to-wire with the Auggies before three straight Augsburg goals sent Concordia to a 3-2 defeat.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (11/16/24)---Concordia showed a marked improvement in its second game of the year as they battled Augsburg to a 1-goal decision.
Less than 24 hours after falling by six goals in the season opener, the Cobbers went wire-to-wire with the Auggies before three straight Augsburg goals sent Concordia to a 3-2 defeat.
The offensive star of the day for the Cobbers was junior forward Morgan Sauvageau. Sauvageau netted both of the Concordia goals with her first giving CC a 1-0 lead in the second minute of the second period.
Concordia had the better play in the first period as they outshot the Auggies 10-5. Unfortunately, the Cobbers were unable to score, and the teams went to the first intermission deadlocked at 0-0.
Sauvageau scored Concordia's first goal of the season when she carried the puck across the Augsburg blueline and then snapped home a shot into the lower right corner of the net. Senior Abbey Hardwick picked up the assist on the goal at 1:02 after she fed Sauvageau the puck in the CC defensive zone.
Augsburg (3-0-1, 2-0-0 MIAC) tied the game midway through the second frame with a power play goal at 10:35. The goal would be the first of three consecutive strikes from AU.
They would net the go-ahead goal at 13:46 of the second period and added the third at 11:24 of the final period.
Sauvageau got the Cobbers back to within one goal at the 13:25 mark of the third. The goal came after junior Memphis Mertens fired a shot from the left faceoff circle. The puck caromed directly to Sauvageau who was standing on the left side of the net. She was able to control the puck and slot home the rebound.
The second goal gave Sauvageau her fourth career multi-goal game and first since the 2022-23 season.
Concordia had three shots on goal in the final 3 minutes of play but couldn't come up with the equalizer.
The Cobbers were outshot 29-26 for the game. Abbey Reule had a team-high five shots on goal.
Junior goalie Hailee Bailey stopped 26 shots in her first start of the season.
Concordia will face another stellar opponent next weekend when they travel to St. Peter to take on No.2-ranked Gustavus on Nov. 22-23.
