EAU CLAIRE, Wis. (1/10/25)---Memphis Mertens scored a pair of goals, goalie Ashlea Arvidson came up with a career-high 44 saves and helped Concordia upset No.9-ranked Wis.-Eau Claire 3-1 in Eau Claire.
The upset win marked the second time in the past four seasons that the Cobbers have knocked off the Blugolds when they have been ranked in the Top 10 of Division III. CC posted a 3-2 overtime win at the start of the 2021-22 season when Eau Claire was ranked No.2 in the country.
Mertens gave Concordia the momentum in the game when she staked the Cobbers to a 1-0 lead at the 7:50 mark of the opening period. CC was killing off a penalty when she took a pass from Malorie Anderson in the neutral zone, cut between two Blugold defenders and fired a shot into the top left corner.
The goal was Merten's first of the game and second of the season while Anderson recorded her first collegiate assist.
Wis.-Eau Claire (10-5) would tie the game in the fourth minute of the second period, but the tie score would only last for 81 seconds.
Junior Morgan Sauvageau reclaimed the 1-goal advantage for Concordia. She took a perfectly placed pass from Anderson just inside the Blugold blue line on the left side of the ice, cut into the middle and let go of a shot that beat the goalie low on the glove side.
The eventual game-winning goal came at 4:21 of the second period and would be the only goal for a full 13 minutes of play.
Arvidson and the Cobber defense were able to withstand a strong push from Eau Claire at the end of the second frame and start of the third.
Mertens was able to give the Cobbers some breathing room midway through the third period. She notched her second goal of the game by using her speed to get around the UWEC defense. Mertens poke-checked the puck away from one of the Blugolds in the neutral zone, raced down the right wing and went top shelf from the bottom of the right faceoff circle.
The unassisted goal at 11:28 gave CC a 2-goal lead at 3-1.
Both teams had a power play opportunity in the final 6 minutes, and neither could convert.
The Blugolds pulled their goalie with 2:05 left in the third period but only managed to put two shots on goal during that time.
UWEC outshot the Cobbers 45-24 in the game. Arvidson stopped the final 29 shots she faced and finished with 44 saves on the day. It is the second time in the last three games she has stopped at least 40 shots in a game. Arvidson is second in the MIAC in total saves (256) and saves per game (28.44).
Concordia will finish off the 2-game series at Eau Claire on Saturday, Jan. 11 at 2 p.m.
