MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. (11/14/25)---The conference opener was a tall task for the Cobbers on Friday. They had to play on the road and at defending MIAC champion, and No.3-ranked, Augsburg.
For 50 of the 60 minutes, Concordia was up to the task as the Cobbers were deadlocked in a 2-2 battle with the Auggies but a pair of goals in the second half of the final period gave Augsburg a 4-2 win.
The teams traded goals in the first two periods of play and then again in the final eight minutes of the third period before Augsburg netted the decisive two goals in a span less than four minutes.
Augsburg (3-1-0, 1-0-0 MIAC) opened the scoring at 8:41 of the first period and that was how the game would stay until the 14th minute of the second period.
Concordia (0-3-0, 0-1-0 MIAC) tied the game for the first time when first-year forward Addie Moos scored on the power play at 13:41. Morgan Sauvageau and Taylor Severson set up the goal that came 25 seconds into the extra-skater advantage.
The Cobbers held the puck in the Auggie defensive zone the entire 25 second before getting the equalizer. Moos fired a centering pass from the red line on the right wing. The puck got knocked around in front of goal and Moos was able to pounce on the loose puck after going towards the goal and flicked home the goal from inside the Auggie crease.
The goal was Moos' first collegiate strike and tied the game at 1-1.
The Auggies regained the 1-goal advantage at the 3:53 mark of the final frame before junior Taylyn Cope knotted the game at 2-2.
Cope's even-strength goal at 7:29 is an early contender for goal of the year. She took control of the puck in the neutral zone, made a slick move around the defense at the Augsburg blue line, outfought three defenders and shot the puck as she was being dragged down from behind.
The "ESPN Top 10" goal was Cope's first of the season and 13th of her career. Memphis Mertens got credit for the assist as she knocked the puck out of the Cobber defensive zone to set up the solo effort.
Concordia was outshot 38-17 in the game and both teams went 1-for-4 on the power play.
Mertens led CC with five shots on goal.
First-year netminder Abby Huselid made 34 saves in her second collegiate start.
The two teams will finish off the 2-game series on Saturday, Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. at the Eg Saugestad Ice Arena.
