Record-Setting Relays Highlight Many Miles Weekend
DES MOINES, Iowa/INDIANOLA, Iowa/JAMESTOWN, N.D. (4/24-25/26)---It was a tough weekend to be a relay record holder in the Cobber all-time record book.
Concordia athletes used the annual Drake/Simpson/Jamestown tri-event weekend to smash a pair of school relay marks.
Both records came at the Drake Relays. The first record that was taken out of the books was the distance medley relay mark. The crew of Londyn Ames, Emma Norton, Josie Brown and Kelyn Henry-Perlich ran a time of 12:16.07 in a race that features a leg of 400, 800, 1200 and 1600 meters.
Their finishing time broke the previous school record of 12:16.55 set in 2006.
The shuttle hurdle relay team of Kaili Malvey, Lauren Selle, Lauren Pearson and Abby Lovelace reached even farther back into the record book to smash a 21-year-old school record. The group of four raced up and down the track and crossed the line in a time of 1:03.71 which broke the record of 1:05.05 set at the Kansas Relays in 2005.
The many-miles weekend started in Indianola, Iowa where a select crew competed in the Kip Janvrin Open at Simpson College. The Cobbers had five athletes post personal best times at the meet and were led by sophomore Ashley Nelson, who clocked an 18:04.45 in the 5,000 meters. Her time is No.8 in the conference this year and she now owns Top 10 marks in both the 5K and 10K.
Mailvey, Pearson and Selle all put up PR times in the 100-meter hurdles. Mailvey led the trio with a time of 15.56 and Pearson was close behind at 15.83. Both marks are in the Top 12 of the MIAC. Selle crossed the line in 16.50 which will qualify her for the conference meet in the event.
Pearson also came up with a PR in the long jump as she gets ready for the MIAC heptathlon. She soared to a distance of 16-08.00 which ties her previous PR.
Concordia finished off the weekend by competing at the Al Cassell Classic in Jamestown.
Like most meets in the spring, the Cobbers had several athletes post PR marks.
The top finishes at the meet were turned in by a pair of throwers. Genevieve Dabout and Kaycee Endreson both posted third-place finishes in Jamestown.
Dabout was third in the discus with a distance of 121-10. That mark is just shy of her season best which came at the CSB Invite and has her in the No.6 spot in the conference.
Endreson unleashed a toss of 40-05.00 in the shot put claim her third-place honor. That mark is a personal best and No.8 in the MIAC. She gives CC four athletes in the Top 8 of the conference in the shot put.
Genevieve Gruba and Alaina Voss had fourth-place finishes at the meet as the majority of the CC crew in Jamestown were field athletes. Gruba was fourth in the javelin at 122-06.00 and Voss was fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 129-06.
In a strange break from the norm in track and field, Concordia will actually get to stay at home next weekend when they host the annual Cobber Open on Saturday, May 2 at 1 p.m.
