Cobbers Outlast No. 15 UW–Stout in Physical Overtime Battle
Concordia built a four-goal cushion through two periods and answered a late rally by No. 15 UW–Stout with an aggressive odd-man rush in overtime, earning a hard-fought 6–5 victory in a MIAC–WIAC crossover showdown at home.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/10/26) — Concordia built a four-goal cushion through two periods and answered a late rally by No. 15 UW–Stout with an aggressive odd-man rush in overtime, earning a hard-fought 6–5 victory in a MIAC–WIAC crossover showdown at home.
Concordia weathered early pressure from Wisconsin–Stout in the opening minutes as the Blue Devils generated several chances from in tight. Goalie Dane Couture and the Cobber defense stood firm, blocking shots and limiting second opportunities to keep the game scoreless through the first half of the period.
Momentum shifted late in the period as Concordia began to impose its will offensively. After a flurry of close-range opportunities, Kaleb Pitman broke through at the 4:45 mark, finishing from the top of the crease off a feed from Caden Triggs to give the Cobbers a 1–0 lead. Concordia kept pressing and struck again just under three minutes later when Carson Triggs capitalized on continued net-front pressure at 1:29, extending the lead to 2–0 heading into the first intermission.
The Cobbers carried that momentum into the second period, immediately attacking the net and forcing Stout to defend in its own zone. The pressure paid off at 14:02 when Tucker Skime buried a shot from the slot off assists from Talan Plante and Tal Halliday, pushing the lead to 3–0 and prompting a goalie change for the Blue Devils.
Stout (11-3-1) responded shortly after, cutting the deficit to 3–1 with a goal from behind the net, but Concordia quickly reasserted control. Following a series of scrums and offsetting penalties at mid-period, the Cobbers continued to dictate play at even strength. At 9:16, Pitman struck again, finishing a point-blank chance off passes from Jack Hanson and Zach Stoner to restore a three-goal cushion.
Concordia added to the lead while shorthanded at 4:55, as Ben Luedtke capitalized on a rush opportunity and beat the Stout goalie from in front of the net, giving the Cobbers a commanding 5–1 advantage heading into the second intermission.
The Blue Devils opened the third period with urgency, pushing the pace and attacking the crease. The Blue Devils generated momentum midway through the frame, scoring twice from in close to trim Concordia's lead. Stout continued to apply pressure and cut the deficit to one with just over 10 minutes remaining, setting up a tense final stretch.
Despite Concordia's efforts to close out the game with aggressive puck pressure and hard battles around the net, Wisconsin–Stout converted on a late power-play opportunity to even the score with three minutes remaining. The teams finished regulation locked in a 5–5 tie, forcing five minutes of three-on-three overtime.
The Cobbers wasted no time asserting themselves in the three-on-three overtime, controlling possession off the opening faceoff and immediately attacking the net. Concordia generated multiple point-blank chances early in the extra session, forcing Wisconsin–Stout to defend under pressure as the Cobbers pushed play through the middle of the ice.
The pressure paid off at 2:33 of overtime when Will Hofer finished from in front of the goal, burying the game-winner off feeds from Carson Triggs and Skime. The goal capped Concordia's aggressive response after seeing its lead erased and sealed a hard-fought overtime victory in front of the home crowd.
The Blue Devils outshot Concordia 35-34 wih Couture making 30 stops to pick up his third win of the year.
The Cobbers improved to 4-7-2 on the season and return to action on Friday, Jan. 16, when they host St. Scholastica for a 7 p.m. puck drop.
