Metcalf And 30 Minutes Of Defense Lead to Key MIAC Win

MOORHEAD, Minn. (1/28/26)---Concordia's defense was stuck out in the ice-cold temperatures for the first quarter of their game against St. Benedict but once they warmed up they were able to put the Bennies' offense in the deep freeze and come away with a 57-53 win.
The Cobbers gave up 21 points in the first 10 minutes of play and then limited St. Benedict to only 32 points for the final 30 minutes of play. The CC defense held the Bennies to 29.5% (13-for-44) from the field and 18.2% (2-for-11) in the final three quarters on Wednesday.
The win over St. Benedict completes the season sweep for Concordia. The Cobbers have now won nine of the last 10 games against the Bennies and 12 of the last 14.
The win also ups the Cobbers' overall record to 15-3 on the year. CC is 9-2 in conference play and tied atop the MIAC standings.
The Bennies fall to12 -6 in all games and 7-4 in league play.
While the Concordia defense was dialed in for the final 30 minutes, sophomore forward Maya Metcalf was on point for the entire game. She was the dominant force behind the Cobbers' attack and finished with career-high numbers for points and rebounds.
Metcalf was 12-for-21 from the floor and dropped 27 points on the Bennies. She also came away with 16 rebounds and two blocks to complete her all-around performance.
The Cobbers scored the first two points of the game but then gave up a 12-2 run and never led until early in the third quarter.
St. Benedict led 31-29 at the break before CC went on a 13-5 streak to grab a 42-36 lead with 2:29 left in the third quarter.
Concordia never relinquished the lead, but the Bennies were able to cut the deficit to one point on four occasions before tying the score at 51-51 with 2:09 left in regulation.
The Cobbers were able to outscore CSB 6-2 down the stretch thanks to layups from Taya Jeffrey and Genevieve Gruba and game-sealing free throws from Molly Musland.
Musland also came up with the defensive play of the game when she blocked a potential game-tying shot from five feet with 2-seconds left on the clock.
Besides the 27-16 game from Metcalf, Concordia got a 13-point game from Jeffrey, who also had six rebounds and three assists.
Musland finished with four points, five rebounds and a career-high seven assists.
Concordia will finish off their 3-game, MIAC Top 5 stretch when they play at Gustavus on Saturday, Jan. 31 at 1 p.m.
