Early Strikes Stop Cobbers In Season Opener
A pair of goals in the first 11:09 proved to be the difference in the Cobbers’ 3-1 season-opening loss against Wis.-Eau Claire.
MOORHEAD, Minn. (10/31/25)---A pair of goals in the first 11:09 proved to be the difference in the Cobbers' 3-1 season-opening loss against Wis.-Eau Claire.
The Blugolds, who opened the season in the "others receiving votes" category in the first USCHO Division III national rankings, scored at in the sixth minute of play and added a second on a breakaway in the 12th minute to jump to a 2-0 lead.
Concordia went back-and-forth with Eau Claire for the final 48 minutes of play with each team posting one goal.
The Cobbers trailed 2-0 after the first period of play but got their first goal of the season midway through the second frame.
Senior Memphis Mertens put CC on the board when she slammed home a rebound at the 10:25 mark. Morgan Sauvageau was able to intercept a breakout pass at the UWEC blueline and made a pass to Taylyn Cope, who was standing all alone on the top of the crease. Cope's shot was stopped by Blugold goalie Alex Backmann but the rebound went right to Mertens, who knocked home the putback from the left side of the goal.
Mertens, who finished third on the team in scoring last season, now has seven goals since joining Concordia at the start of the 2024-25 season.
CC trailed 2-1 heading into the third period and then Eau Claire was able to come up with the insurance goal in the third minute of the final period to bring the score line to 3-1.
Concordia pulled goalie Hailee Bailey with just under 2:00 left in the game and held possession of the puck in the Blugolds' end the entire time but couldn't come up with a second strike.
Eau Claire outshot the Cobbers 20-17 for the game. Neither team was able to score on the power play with CC going 0-for-2 and UWEC being held off the board in their lone PP chance.
Madilyn Skogman led CC with three shots, while Bailey turned aside 17 shots in the game.
The same two teams will finish off the series tomorrow morning at 11 a.m.
